CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – John Poss has been named the first head coach of the new Wilson College baseball program according to Director of Athletics Lori Frey.
 
"After an extensive national search, I am elated that John Poss rose to the top of the list of candidates and will lead our new baseball program here at Wilson College," said Frey. "The search committee was impressed with his plan to build the baseball program from the ground up and his commitment to developing outstanding student-athletes."
 
Poss brings an extensive baseball background to Wilson, both as a professional player and as a successful coach. Since 2012, he has led the St. Mary's Catholic High School program in Annapolis, Maryland to a 123-28 record while grooming 22 student-athletes that would go on to compete at the collegiate level. Prior to taking over the program at St. Mary's Catholic, Poss served as an assistant coach at his high school alma mater DeMatha Catholic, where he helped lead the powerhouse program to two Maryland State Private School championships.
 
After a successful collegiate playing career for NCAA Division 1 programs at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and Winthrop University, Poss enjoyed a professional playing career in the Frontier and Atlantic Leagues as well as a stint in the Baltimore Orioles organization in 2000.
 
"I am very thankful to Lori Frey and the search committee for this awesome opportunity," said Poss. "I'm extremely excited and honored to be the first head baseball coach at Wilson College."
 
Poss will be tasked with putting together a team that will begin competition during the 2018-19 academic year and is prepared to take on that challenge. "I'm looking forward to begin recruiting immediately," said Poss. "I will be looking for student athletes that are a good fit for Wilson College both on and off of the field. The players who I will be targeting, will love the game, are great teammates, and that believe in the team first philosophy."
 
Wilson's historic first baseball game will be played in the spring of 2019. The new baseball program will compete at historic Henninger Field which is steeped in baseball history including hosting the 1929 World Champion New York Yankees for an exhibition game in which Babe Ruth hit a home run.
