Cook wins 500th at Coe

Steve Cook won his 500th win as the Coe College Head Baseball Coach in Coe's 9-4 game three victory.

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team awarded Head Coach Steve Cook his 500th win in the series sweep against Wartburg. 

Jack Greene (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) tossed the entire 7-0 shutout in Coe's first win over the Knights on Saturday, April 6th. The junior pitcher gave up five hits and just one walk while striking out seven as he advances to 4-0 on the season. The Kohawk's dominating offense was led by Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde). The left fielder went 3-for-4 and drove in one run. Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) scored the game-high of three runs and led Coe with two RBIs. 

Nolan Arp (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), Burns and DeLaney each finished with a double, while DeLaney and Jordan Kaplan (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) hit two out against Wartburg's Milewski. The Kohawks played errorless ball and outhit Wartburg 12 to five. 

The Knights were the first on the board in game two. Wartburg gained their largest lead of the series in the bottom of the fifth as they took a 4-0 lead. Coe answered back in the seventh scoring two, then piled it on scoring seven runs the top of the ninth. 

Five Kohawks finished with two hits. Third baseman Jacob Henry (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) went a perfect 2-for-2 and led the team with three RBIs, while second baseman Nolan Arp went 2-for-4 with a walk. Burns continued to have a day in the box with two more doubles. Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin), DeLaney and Kaplan also finished game two with a double while Nolan Weber (Cascade, Iowa/Cascade) hit his first home run of the season. 

Andrew Schmit (Ames, Iowa/Ames) threw five innings, giving up the Knight's only runs of the game, then TJ Deardorff (Dubuque, Iowa/Senior) took the mound in the bottom of the fifth. Earning the win, Deardorff advances to 3-0 on the season. 

With 500 wins, Head Coach Steve Cook is by far the winningest coach in Coe baseball history. Cook became the head coach in 1997 and posts a record of 500-432-1. 

The Kohawks (20-2, 10-1 A-R-C) are on an eight-game winning streak. Coe will complete their three-game American Rivers Conference series against Dubuque on Tuesday, April 9th.
