Millsaps defeats top seed in SAA tounament

JWhitworth rallied from a 4-0 deficit against the most dynamic pitcher in the Northwest Conference to claim a 5-4 victory over Pacific Lutheran in the opening round of the NWC Tournament on Friday afternoon at Merkel Field. Whitman College pulled away early for a 7-1 win over Pacific (Ore.) in the other first round match up. The Pirates (23-12) and Blues (21-16) will play a winners bracket game at on Saturday, while the Lutes (22-15) and Boxers (24-17) play a loser-out game.

Sewanee rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the third inning to even the score at 10 runs each after seven innings, but fell in the ninth, 11-10, to No. 25 Birmingham-Southern at the opening day of the 2019 SAA Tournament in the Birmingham-Southern pod from Striplin Field. Oglethorpe scored 15 runs on 16 hits in a 15-7 defeat of the third-seeded Berry Vikings. The sixth-seeded Stormy Petrels jumped on the Vikings early, scoring eight runs over the first two innings, and maintained their lead from there. Berry got to within three runs late in the game, but Oglethorpe pulled away with five more runs in the ninth. Over in Hendrix, Millsaps opened up postseason play with the No. 1 seeded Warriors of Hendrix. Solid starting pitching combined with timely hitting helped lead the Majors to the 5-1 opening round upset. Barret Kaul's final line included 7.1 innings pitched, just two hits allowed, the one earned run and three strikeouts. Offensively, Keaton Page led the way with three hits. Johnstone added a pair of base hits and a RBI, while Fondren and Brock also drove in runs for the Majors. Rhodes will meet Millsaps after a 8-7 win over Centre.

Covenant saw its season come to an end on Friday with two losses in the USA South Tournament. The Scots fell in a winners' bracket game, 11-1, to No. 5 seed N.C. Wesleyan before falling in an elimination game, 17-10, to No. 6 seed Greensboro. Covenant ends the season with a 17-22 overall  record. John Mitchell broke the Covenant program single-season record for stolen bases with 27 as he collected five in the loss to Greensboro. Mitchell also tied a program single-season record for RBIs with 44 after tallying two on the day. Piedmont, Mehodist and Maryville also ended their tournament hopes. Piedmont lost 6-3 to Huntingdon and Maryville fell to Greensboro 5-0 in elimination games to start the day. Methodist lost a pair of extra innings games, 7-5 (10) to LaGrange and 8-7 (10) to Huntingdon. N.C. Wesleyan and LaGrange will meet in the winners bracket final Saturday as the two remining teams without a loss. Greensboro and Huntingdon are the remaining teams in the USA South tournament and must win to extend their season.

had a championship feel to them all day, with strong
pitching and timely hitting leading to an 8-1 win in game
one. Aurora countered by fighting their way past CUC 6-5
in game two for the split.

The University of Northwestern (Minn.) welcomed Martin Luther to Reynolds Field for a pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference games Friday evening. The Eagles put together a dominant 12-1 (seven inning) win in game one, and tacked on a 4-3 victory in game two to improve to 7-5 in league play. The Eagles recorded 25 hits on the day. Wyatt Morrell  showcased a notable performance in the series, going 4-for-6 at the plate with a triple, a homerun and seven RBIs. The sophomore also threw 8.1 innings in game two to record his fourth win on the mound this season. With a runner in scoring position in game two Bradley Spencer took the mound with one out on the board. Martin Luther's Deisinger lined out to the shortshot before Spencer recorded a big time strike out to earn his seventh save this season and secure the 4-3 win. With the save, Spencer tied the Northwestern school record for saves in a season, set by Ryan Sutterer in 2016.

Carthage (16-19, 6-14) opened a three-game series with CCIW opponent Carroll (Wis., 14-20, 6-12) on Friday by splitting a doubleheader with a the Pioneers at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.  Carthage won the opening game, 5-2, but lost the nightcap, 7-6. "They were both good games," said Carthage head coach Augie Schmidt, "but we're snake bit.  We were a strike away from winning the second game, and the next thing you know, we lost.  That's happened a lot this year.  It's a like a deer in the headlights late in the game.  We battled, and we played well enough to win that second game.  I don't have many answers.  We really need someone to come out of the bullpen and not walk people.  We give everybody everything, and then it all it takes is one bloop hit to lose a game.  We thought we might be over the hump, but this was crushing."

Extending their CCIW win streak to 13 games, records fell for the North Central College team in Friday's doubleheader sweep of Augustana, 13-2, 4-1, at Swanson Stadium. Jeremy Quade's three total runs scored over the twin bill increase his career total to 181, breaking Ken Ritter's '88 record that stood for nearly 31 years. Quade also set a new program record playing in his 168th career game, as the senior has not missed a game in his four-year career as a Cardinal. On the mound, Nick Rogalski recorded the final out of game one, marking his 76th career appearance, breaking Derek Elftmann's '02 previous record set in 2002.

Texas Lutheran junior Tyler Cauley tied the single-game record for triples (with two), went 4-for-5, and drove in three runs (including the game-winner) as the sixth-ranked Bulldogs rallied for a 9-7 road win Friday over Schreiner. TLU fell behind in the bottom of the seventh but rallied for three runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth. The Bulldogs improved to 28-9 overall and to 13-3 in the SCAC. Schreiner dropped to 12-26 overall and to 5-11 in the SCAC. Cauley tripled in the third and fifth innings. Both triples came with Cauley batting as the lead-off hitter in the inning. He added a single in the first and the game-winning single in the eighth.

No. 13-ranked Washington University tied a season-high in runs during a 17-0 nonconference victory over Greenville at Kelly Field. WashU improved to 27-5-1 on the year with the win while dropping Greenville to 20-14 overall. The Bears totaled 18 hits which is the second highest figure for the team on the season. Senior pitcher John Howard earned his ninth consecutive victory in his 10th start of the year. 

No. 10 Salisbury opened a three-game series against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Southern Virginia and, following a two-hour weather delay, came away with the 6-3 victory. The Sea Gulls score four runs in the fifth to take ther first lead when the lightning and rain took over the game and the game was eventually called and Salisbury was awarded the victory.

For the third time in program history, the No. 15 Coe baseball team reached 30 wins in a season as they topped Loras, 6-2, Friday afternoon in American Rivers Conference baseball action at Daniels Park. This year's version of Coe baseball is behind the 2011 team who won 32 games and the 2015 squad who won 34 contests. Jacob Burns, Nolan Arp, and Jacob Henry all had two hits for Coe. Andrew Schmit pitched seven solid innings, scattering eight hits and striking out six to move his record to 4-1. TJ Deardorff pitched the final two innings to record his third save of the season.

Brandeis rode the left arm of junior Greg Tobin and the hot bat of sophomore catcher Luke Hall to a 5-3 victory of Case Western Reserve University in the first game of a four-game University Athletic Association series. The Judges improve to 14-17, 2-11 in the UAA with their second-straight conference win, while the Spartans fall to 20-12, 5-6 UAA. Tobin was masterful for seven innings today, allowing just two runs on two hits. He walked four and hit two batters, but struck out nine, a season-best and on shy of a career-best. Tobin improved to 4-3 on the season and lowered his ERA to  3.91 after allowing two earned runs or fewer for the fifth time in seven starts.Hall produced his second four-hit game of the season and of his career, going 4-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. He drove in a run in the first inning with a single and added an RBI double in the fifth.

Adrian extended its winning streak to six games with a convincing sweep of visiting Trine, 14-1 and 8-3, in a MIAA doubleheader. Junior pitcher Pierce Banks struck out seven batters, walked two, allowed a run and gave up four hits in five innings to get the Game 1 victory, improving to 6-2 on the season. Freshman Maxwell Denny won his eighth decision against no losses in Game 2, when he went seven strong innings. He had a career-best nine strikeouts, walked two, gave up an earned run and allowed just two hits. Sophomore Thomas Miller was 4-for-5, including a triple, in the first game and followed up with 2-for-3, including another triple, with two runs batted in and two runs scored in the second.
