Top teams gets doubleheader sweeps

2-1, with a 2-1 walkoff win in the second game of the day.

The nation's leading offense for all NCAA Divisions was on display again Saturday afternoon as the second-ranked Christopher Newport Captains scored 31 runs and swept a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg. Christopher Newport improved to 27-3 overall and 14-1 in conference play with a pair of dominant victories, downing the Lions 18-6 and 13-4. CNU will take on Penn State Harrisburg (23-10, 11-6) for the series finale on Sunday as the Captains look for a sweep in conference play. The backstop/DH combo for the Captains had an impressive performance in the twin bill as senior Ryan Grubbs and sophomore Eric O'Brien combined to go 12-for-19 at the plate with extra-base hits. O'Brien blistered five doubles on the day, including three in the second, while Grubbs smashed a pair of home runs. While catching in game one, Grubbs drove in a team-high six RBI and he tacked on two more as designated hitter in game two.

The No. 1 Concordia Chicago Cougars returned to NACC action after their 24 game winning streak came to an end on Thursday night. Looking to stay perfect in NACC play the Cougars welcomed MSOE to River Forest today. On a windy day the Cougars' offense carried the team to seventh consecutive NACC sweep by scores of 11-10 and 12-2. With run totals of 11 and 12 in the games today CUC has now scored in double digits in 12 of the 14 conference games this season.

Ramapo defeated #4 Rowan 12-6 in NJAC action. With the win the Roadrunners earn their sixth straight win and move to 19-10 overall, 10-3 in the conference while Rowan sees their three-game win streak snapped. The Profs now stand at 24-7 overall and 10-3 in the NJAC.  Ramapo scored four runs in the top of the first inning, all with two outs, to take a 4-0 lead. They added three in the second and the Profs could not stop the Roadrunners.

No. 16 Washington University captured the program's eighth UAA Title Saturday after picking up a pair of wins in a doubleheader over Emory University at Kelly Field. The Bears improved to 25-5-1 (11-2 UAA) with a 3-2 win in game one and a 7-2 victory in game two. The Eagles fell to 19-15 overall (7-4 UAA) after the doubleheader. Despite being outhit in the two games, 16-13, WashU took two games with timely hitting and exceptional plays in the field. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader proved to be a pitcher's game down to the final stretch. WashU pulled out a tightly contested game after freshman right fielder Jackson Gray delivered the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning after the Eagles rallied to tie the score at 2-2 in the top half of the frame. The Bears took control of game two from the get go as junior pitcher Matt Ashbaugh was solid on the mound.

In a wild game one, Johns Hopkins found itself in a 6-0 hole after the top of the first, but the Blue Jays rallied and after the top two teams in the Centennial Conference went back-and-forth throughout the majority of the game, it was the Blue Jays coming out with the 16-14 win. Just like game one, the second game of the doubleheader was a wild slugfest with saw Dickinson comeback from down 7-3, but the Blue Jays rallied back and took game two by an 11-10 score. The victory in game one was the first time Hopkins has won a game after trailing by six runs. The last time the Blue Jays achieved the feat was on May, 15 2009 when JHU defeated Salisbury, 11-6 in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 23-ranked Swarthmore swept Gettysburg in two blowout wins at Clothier Field on Saturday. The Garnet (19-11, 7-7) have now climbed into a tie with Muhlenberg and Ursinus for fifth in the Centennial Conference standings. All three teams trail Haverford by one game. Swarthmore has four games remaining on its schedule. The Garnet play first-place Johns Hopkins and second-place Dickinson two times each. Swarthmore got these two wins on Senior Day as the team honored its class with the most wins in program history. The team has a 95-61-1 record.

Coe extended their win streak to 16 games with an
8-5, 15-5 sweep of Simpson.

Trinity's sixth-ranked team finished off a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep with a 14-2 win over Schreiner. Trinity reaches the 30-win plateau with its sixth consecutive victory, improving to 30-9 overall and 14-4 in SCAC play. Prior to the game, the Tigers honored their nine seniors: Dalys Binder, Brannen Caraway, Ian Hussian, Jeff Lonnecker, Ryan Manz, Jake Martin, Logan Morrison, Holden Nix, and John Tucker. Corey Cater (7-2) allowed just one unearned run on three hits over 6.0 innings on the mound, striking out seven batters without issuing a walk. Cater leads the team with seven wins, an ERA of 2.17, and 65 strikeouts. Caraway had a double and a grand slam, driving in six of Trinity's 12 runs in the game for a career-best in RBI. The home run was the first of his career with the Tigers.

No. 14 Piedmont scored all nine of its runs in the eighth and ninth innings to rally past Huntingdon, 9-3, and earn a series sweep on Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.  With the win, the Lions (29-8, 19-3 USA South) clinched the USA South Regular Season Championship and earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming USA South Championship Tournament. Brady Ballstadt's eighth-inning double was his 19th of the season, breaking his own single-season record, set in his sophomore season of 2017.

No. 20 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater pushed its lead in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings to two games Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Finlandia (Mich.) at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Warhawks (20-6 overall, 13-1 WIAC) defeated the Lions 9-3 in Game 1 before earning a 10-0 victory in the nightcap in an eight-inning contest shortened due to run rule. With the four-game sweep, UW-Whitewater increased its lead in the league standings to two games over UW-La Crosse just past the midway point of the conference slate. The team also secured its 10th consecutive victory.

Denison's program-best 17-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday after a doubleheader split with Ohio Wesleyan.  The eighth-ranked Big Red took game one, 3-2 before suffering a 15-5 loss in game two. Denison (27-3, 11-1 NCAC) took the opener, 3-2, thanks to a two-run home run by Brian McAuliffe in the sixth and an RBI ground out by Ty Robinson with the bases loaded in the seventh. In game two, Ohio Wesleyan scored three runs in the first and six in the second, powered by a grand slam by Canyon McWilliams. The 9-0 cushion was enough to force the split.

With its sweep Saturday of Greensboro, Methodist finishes the regular season second in the USA South Athletic Conference standings. The Monarchs routed Greensboro in seven innings, 20-6, in Game 1 and won 8-3 in the second game of the doubleheader. Methodist ends a half-game back of first place Piedmont College. As the second seed, the Monarchs will begin the USA South Conference tournament against seventh-place Maryville (Tenn.) College. Methodist won that season series 2-1. In Game 1 against Greensboro, Methodist set multiple season-highs. The Monarchs crossed the 20-hit threshold for the first time since 2016 and the 20 runs scored is the most by Methodist since 2017.

 

No. 22 LaGrange celebrated Senior Day with a USA South doubleheader sweep of William Peace at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers (26-9, 17-5 USA South) blanked the Pacers (9-26, 5-18 USA South) by scores of 12-0 and 11-0. The first game was called after seven innings due to the 12-run rule. Fain led the LC pitching staff which limited the Pacers to just seven hits and never allowed a runner past second in the doubleheader. Fain (5-0) faced only one batter over the minimum in seven innings of the second game. He allowed only one hit, walked one, and struck out nine. Richie Post (6-1) scattered three hits over five innings in the first game. Brown threw two scoreless innings of relief to close out the gam. The Panthers had 20 hits in the twinbill and took advantage of 17 walks issued by the Pacers' pitchers.
