Dominant pitching key to opening wins

Tim Carfrey threw six strong innings and #2 Alvernia posted a 5-run fourth inning on its way to a 10-1 win over #3 Arcadia Thursday evening in game two of the MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championships at PEOPLESBank Park. Carfrey scattered six hits and struck out five. Mike Cirilli drove in three runs and Nathan Sides, Matt Briner, and Logan Levan drove in two each. Alvernia will face #4 Widener who defeated top seed Hood 11-3 in the winners bracket final Friday morning. Two elimination games will follow as the championship teams will be determined.

Nichols defeated Salve Regina 9-1 in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament Thursday afternoon at Reynolds Field in Newport, Rhode Island. The Bison (21-18, 6-8 CCC) were powered by three home runs and three RBI singles. Senior Joe Assenza went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, while graduate student Chris Anderson went 1-for-4 with one run and three RBI after hitting the first home run of the day to start the offense for the Bison. Freshman Tyler Heenan had a career day, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, including a home run. Sophomore Robert Cobb quieted the strong Salve (21-15, 8-6 CCC) offense, holding the Seahawks to just one hit over eight lights out innings. Junior Brodie Altiere finished out the game for the Bison, allowing one run on two hits through one inning. The Bison got six runs on seven hits through six innings off of Seahawks sophomore starter Michael Viveiros. Salve’s relievers, junior Zach Dionne and sophomore Dean Borders, combined for three runs on five hits and two walks through the final three innings. Third-seeded Endicott used a 12-run seventh inning to turn aside sixth-seeded Gordon, 14-1, in the only other game in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.

Tim Kutcher and Mark Lopez had five RBIs each in the game as Johns Hopkins advanced to the winner's bracket in the Centennial Conference Tournament with a 14-4 victory over Muhlenberg. The Mules will take on Haverford on Saturday in an elimination game. Kutcher went 3-5 on the day with two home runs and five RBIs. He is now fourth in the team with nine home runs and also ranks fourth with 30 RBIs this season.

Rain delayed the opening game of the ASC Blue Division bracket and then forced a change of venue as Louisiana College and Texas-Dallas will pick up where they left off. It was less challanging in the Red Bracket as East Texas Baptist doubled up Hardin-Simmons 4-2. ETBU will play the winner of Concordia (Texas) and Sul Ross State with the loser moving to an elimination round with Hardin-Simmons.

The GNAC continued their tournament as second-seeded Saint Joseph's College (30-9, 13-3 GNAC) outlasted #3 Johnson & Wales University (24-14, 12-4 GNAC), 4-3. With the victory, Saint Joseph's advances to the winners' bracket of the conference tourney and will face top ranked Suffolk. Suffolk defeated Lasell 4-3 to get to the winners bracket. Both winners had opportunities to add to their leads late but none was needed in either one run win.

Top-seeded Mitchell scored six unanswered runs to post a 6-1 victory over fourth-seeded Eastern Nazarene in the 2019 New England Collegiate Conference Baseball Championship at Alumni Field. Mitchell starter Ryan Solimine turned in 7.0 strong innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out five. He improved to 9-1 on the season. Steve Cochrane led the offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate and drove in three runs. The Mariners (33-6 overall), who picked up their 19th straight win, will next face second-seeded New England College on Saturday by virtue of the Pilgrams 5-2 win over Lesley. Eastern Nazarene (20-18 overall) will face third-seeded Lesley in an elimination game. Mitchell also broke the school record for most wins in a season, surpassing the mark set by the 2015 squad that finished 32-7.

Trailing 6-2 in the ninth, MIT tied the game on a three-run homer by junior Matt Johnston and won the game on an RBI single by sophomore Ethan Rolland in the bottom of the 12th for a 7-6 victory over Springfield. The No. 4 seeded Engineers now advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament at top-seeded Wheaton (Mass.). Prior to the start, the Engineers honored the program's six graduating seniors for their contributions to the program during their four-year careers as they were playing in their last career home game.

Nolan Schoonveld was a two-pronged threat for Hamline at Carleton. The senior rapped out a pair of hits and earned the pitching victory as HU held off the Knights for a 4-3 victory in the opener of a doubleheader in Northfield. The Knights evened matters with a 4-0 victory in the second game. Schoonveld scattered nine hits and got help from Evan Bayer, who retired two batters to earn a save in the lidlifter. The Pipers bunched their runs in the middle three innings with Cullen Buck, Zack Langton and Devin Rodgers getting RBIs. Rodgers scored a run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch that pushed the HU lead to 4-1. The Knights came up with two in the seventh inning and had two runners on base when Bayer closed out matters. Hamline got a career-best performance from starting pitcher Owen Riley in game two. Riley pitched a career-best 7.0 shutout innings of two-hit ball with no walks and three strikeouts en route to his first victory of the season. Neither he nor reliever Peter Hoffman permitted a Piper past second base.

Otterbein traveled north and south for different non-conference outings to continue a week full of action, heading down to Thomas More University in Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon before traveling up to Oberlin College on Thursday. The Cardinals, now 19-16-1 on the season, will have Friday off and then are scheduled to play weekend doubleheaders against Marietta and Franklin. Otterbein defeated Oberlin 13-8 in the Thursday contest. Sophomore Ethan Doty was credited with a victory on the mound as the starter, allowing just one early run over three innings before the Cards employed a whole-staff approach. Stotler hit a perfect 4 for 4 offensively, Brett had three RBI and the victory brings decorated head coach George Powell to 499 for his career. Ben Beachy, who also recently became the program's record holder in career at-bats, currently sits near the top of multiple offense categories and has a chance to become Otterbein's all-time hits leader down the stretch. He has 206 at the moment, just six shy of Meadows and his record 212.

The University of Northwestern Eagles (21-15, 8-6 UMAC) split with the University Minnesota-Morris Cougars on Thursday to clinch a UMAC playoff berth. Morris won the first game 9-6 before Northwestern won game two 10-6. Bradley Spencer set the single-season saves record with his eighth save of the season in the nightcap. In the playoff clinching game, Philip Wall had three hits and drew two walks to reach base five times. Caleb Piersma had two hits and drew a walk and Andrew Simonson had one hit and two walks. Carlton Lindow had two hits and Sam Peterson had a hit and a walk to be the only other Eagles to reach base multiple times. Quinton Lindow got the start and pitched seven innings and gave up three earned runs. Bradley Spencer got his record setting save as he threw the last two innings and struck out three.

The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team won its ninth game in the last 12, scoring three key runs in the top of the sixth on the way to a 14-3 non-conference win over Brandeis University Thursday night at Stein Field. After Brandeis (16-20) tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Eastern (21-16) bounced back with the go-ahead run in the fifth, then tacked on three runs in the sixth on two hits and two errors. Freshman Owen Marica and junior John Mesagno drove in runs with a sacrifice fly and single, respectively, in the inning. Senior William Coleman and sophomore Eric Jaillet each scored three runs and senior Ryan Hood reached safely in his tenth straight game with a sixth-inning walk. Jaillet, freshman Matt Malcom and Mesagno all had two hits and Malcom, seniors Dale Keller and Alexander White all drove in two runs. Sophomore lefty Jordan Federer, the second of six Eastern pitchers, allowed a hit and two walks with a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings for his third win in four decisions.
