COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team completed a four-game Ohio Athletic Conference weekend sweep of Capital with 7-5 and 3-0 wins Sunday at Clowson Field in Columbus.

The Purple Raiders, now winners of seven straight, are 20-6 overall and remain alone in second place in the OAC at 18-6 while Capital falls to 4-22 overall and 3-20 in the OAC.

The 3-0 win in game two also marked career win No. 500 for Paul Hesse, who is in his 25th season as head coach at Mount Union. He is one of only six OAC coaches to have more than 500 career wins as his record stands at 500-407-4.

Early in the day it looked like the milestone win was going to be pushed back at least a week as the Raiders were down 5-1 in the fifth inning of game one.

The rally started with two outs in the sixth inning as Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) drove in two runs with a double to right center that closed the gap to 5-3. In the eighth, pinch hitter RJ Dean (Cuyahoga Heights) was hit by a pitch to start the inning then came home on an RBI triple from Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) that made it 5-4. The ninth innning saw Corey White (Louisville) open the frame with a hit, was lifted for pinch runner Quentin Peters (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Lincoln Park Academy), pinch hitter David Toot (Lisbon / David Anderson) then had a bunt single to put the go ahead run on base, Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) sacrificed bunt to move runners to second and third and Chase Angotti (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) then tied the game with an RBI single. The go-ahead runs came courtsey of a two-run single by freshman Logan Bell (Alliance) to take the score to 7-5.

Capital got a lead-off single in the ninth but reliever Jeremy Sassano (Fairview Park / Fairvew) then induced a double play grounder and a fly-out to shut the door for the Raiders. Sassano pitched the final 4.2 innings out of the pen to pick up his second win of the season.

Capital starter Curtis Clark had scattered eight Mount Union hits over eight innings and allowed four runs, two earned, but was lifted for Jared Heidecker in the ninth, who gave up three runs on five hits to take the loss.

The nightcap was all pitching for the Purple Raiders as Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) and Colin Skufca (Wooster) combined for a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 win.

Sumler had his best start of the season allowing only one hit over 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts to grab his first win of the season while Skufca went the final 2.2 innings for his second save of the season.

Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) hit a ball that was misplayed by Capital to score the Raiders first run in the fourth, Schilling knocked in a run in the seventh and Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) sent a run home in the eighth with a single for Mount Union's scoring. Mazza finished 2-for-4 with that RBI.

Bryant Caporale fell to 0-2 for Capital as he allowed just a run on five hits over 6.0 innings.

Mount Union next plays Wilmington in four-game OAC series next weekend as the team's will play Saturday at 1 p.m. in Alliance before a pair of games Sunday at 1 p.m. in Wilmington.
