Khoury, Collins and Morrissey earn NCBWA honors

Two complete-game shutouts from pitchers in the Centennial Conference garnered the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Div. III Pitcher and Rookie of the Week honors for games played March 14-20, while a five-homer week from a University Athletic Association first baseman claimed this week’s Hitter of the Week award. This week’s honorees were recognized for performances spanning March 14-20.

HITTER OF WEEK

Brandeis University (Massachusetts) graduate student Mike Khoury batted .765 (13-for-17) with a 1.824 slugging percentage in a 4-0 week for the Judges. Khoury scored 13 runs, doubled three times, hit five home runs, and drove in 13 runs. He recorded at least three hits, two runs scored, and two RBI in each game, highlighted by a two-homer game in a 13-6 win over Saint Joseph’s College of Maine and a walk-off single in a 7-6 victory over Bates College (Maine) in the opener of a doubleheader. He homered in each game, posted two games with four runs scored, and had two four-RBI outings.

Honorable Mention Hitter: Charlie Szykowny, Sr., INF, University of Wisconsin-Stout – Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Kwik Trip Baseball Athlete of the Week after batting .500 (16-for-32) with 16 RBI, 13 runs scored, five home runs, and five doubles. Hit a home run in five consecutive games last week and had six multi-hit outings, including a pair of two-hit games against fourth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University. Went 4-for-6 with three RBI against Skidmore College (New York) on March 14, in what marked the first game of the home run streak. Hit a grand slam against Lasell University (Massachusetts).

PITCHER OF WEEK

Johns Hopkins University (Maryland) junior right-hander Kieren Collins pitched the 17th no-hitter in Centennial Conference history and the eighth in program history in a 10-0 win over Ramapo College of New Jersey on St. Patrick’s Day. Collins went the full seven innings and struck out eight without allowing a walk in the complete-game gem. The first Ramapo batter of the game reached on an error and then Collins set down the remaining 21 in order. The milestone marked the sixth individual no-hitter in Blue Jay history and the first no-hitter for Johns Hopkins since 2010, when four pitchers combined for one.

Honorable Mention Pitcher: Alex Gow, Sr., Kenyon College (Ohio) – Threw a seven-inning complete game, allowing no earned runs, in a 10-1 win against Hood College (Maryland) on March 18. Struck out 15 batters while allowing five hits and two walks.

ROOKIE OF WEEK

Washington College (Maryland) right-hander Joe Morrissey struck out a collegiate-best 14 batters in a complete-game, seven-inning, shutout against Albright College (Pennsylvania) on March 18. Morrissey struck out the side in the first and sixth innings and had at least one strikeout in every inning. He scattered four hits and did not walk a batter. Just one Albright runner reached third base during Washington College’s 7-0 win.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters, and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates, and official votes in the Dick Howser Player of the Year Award, Regional Player of the Year, and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication contests, and writing contests.
