Plourde wins 400th game with Skidmore

ARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team swept The College at Old Westbury (13-3, 19-8) on Sunday to secure career win number 400 for head coach Ron Plourde.

Now in his 24th season, Plourde has amassed an overall record of 400-433 with five Liberty League championships and four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.

Max Mello and Jackson Hornung led Skidmore's offense that plated 32 runs on the day and 51 over the four-game weekend sweep. Mello drove in nine runs on the afternoon while Hornung brought in seven. Both players went deep.

GAME 1

  • Mello drove in six runs with a base-clearing triple as part of a seven-run second inning. He smashed a three-run home run two innings later.
    Hornung went 3-for-4 with two RBI, three runs scored, and a walk.
  • Christian Giresi earned the win after going 4.0 innings. He allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
  • Justin Posnik picked up the save. He threw three one-hit innings without allowing a free pass and striking out three.
  • Hornung, Mello, Brendan O'Neill, Sean Lang, Sam Kornet, and William Snyder all had multi-hit games for the Thoroughbreds.


GAME 2

  • Hornung wrapped up his monster day at the plate by going 4-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored. He highlighted Skidmore's seven-run sixth inning with a three-run homer. He also had an RBI double in the fifth and drove in one on a single in the sixth.
  • Skidmore jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After three-straight singles to open the game, runs came in on a bases loaded hit by pitch and a costly infield throwing error.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored three more in the fourth on a two-run single from Mello followed by a run-scoring hit off the bat of Cameron Pedemonti.
    Thirteen batters came to the plate in the sixth. Skidmore scored seven runs on six hits and used the help of three errors and one hit batsmen.
  • Ameer Hasan captured the victory. The lefty starter tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits. He walked one.
  • Mello stole two bases. Danny Melillo, Cameron Pedemonti, and Snyder all swiped one bag.
  • Melillo finished the game 3-for-4 with five runs scored, two RBI, and a pair of walks.


The Thoroughbreds are off to a 4-0 start and outscored their two opponents 51-20. Skidmore will return to the diamond next Sunday, March 13 in Fort Myers, Florida to begin an eight-game Spring Break trip.
