 Augustana (16-5, 2-2) reached the .500-mark in conference play this afternoon with a convincing victory over the Carthage Firebirds (5-15, 0-3). The Vikings used a 10-run fourth inning to blow out the Firebirds 16-4.

Lawrence University pulled off a dramatic doubleheader sweep of Ripon College Tuesday at Capital Credit Union Park and saw a school record fall in the process. Lawrence won the opener 6-0 and took the nightcap 7-6 with a ninth-inning rally. Lawrence slugger Jacob Charon also hit his 10th home run of the season to set a new school record. Ripon built a 6-1 lead through six innings in game two and Lawrence's defense kept the Red Hawks close in the late innings. Freeman got Lawrence's rally in the ninth started with a one-out single, and Charon hit a ground ball past the pitcher and pinch-runner Ethan Plantz scored to give the Vikings the walk-off victory.

The University of Rochester picked up its second win over a ranked opponent this season, defeating 16th-ranked Oswego State 8-4 on Tuesday night at Towers Field. Rochester's win pushes the Yellowjackets to 16-4 on the season, stretching its winning streak to six games. Oswego falls to 13-4 on the year, snapping a four-game winning streak. The Yellowjacket offense was powered by senior Jacob Matzat who launched a key 3-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, with Matzat ending the day as the lone Yellowjacket with multiple hits, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run, two runs and three RBI. Graduate student Matt Cappelletti provided two RBI's with a big, two-out single in the second, building Rochester's lead to 6-1. The Lakers runs all came on home runs, a solo shot in the first by Ryan Enos and a 3-run blast by Kyle Lauria in the third. Enos entered the game hitting .559, leading Division III in batting average.

Adrian College team hosted Trine University on Tuesday in the new midweek series in the MIAA season. The Bulldogs and the Thunder are travel partners and will play one nine inning game during the week for three straight weeks to equal the season series. Tuesday was game one where the Bulldogs went on to defeat Trine 9-5 at Nicolay Field. Trine regained the lead in the seventh scoring on an RBI groundout, but Adrian responded in the bottom half of the inning. Gus Weaks singled in a pair of runs to lead 6-5 followed by a single from Ty Peck to drive in another. The Bulldogs added some insurance in the eighth as Ryan Davis reached on a fielders choice which score Thomas Miller to lead 8-5. On a steal with runners on the corners, the ball was thrown into center field to bring home another run to make it 9-5. Andrew Giorno got the start for Adrian throwing 6.1 innings allowing four earned runs on eight his with a pair of strikeouts. Luc St. Antoine got the win in relief and Jacob Hanoian picked up his third save of the season.

Playing at home for the first time this season, Northern Vermont University-Lyndon put together perhaps their most complete performance of the season to date in defeating in-state rival Norwich University, 10-2. The Hornets improve to 4-14 on the season, while the Cadets fall to 11-8. Hornet starting pitcher Carlos Rodriguez kept Norwich completely in check. He only faced the minimum three batters in five of the first six innings. He struck out four over that frame and allowed only a pair of base hits. Dale Ostermann closed the game out with two innings of scoreless no-hit relief.

Kalamazoo College defeated Hope 6-5 in 13 innings at Woodworth Field Tuesday afternoon/evening. The Hornets led 5-2 after five innings, but the Flying Dutchmen tied it with three runs in the seventh and eighth. In the bottom of the 13th, relief pitcher Brenden Oprinski hit for himself and was hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Doug Propson. Spencer Baldwin was intentionally walked, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Following a Noah Hecht walk to load the bases, Harrison Poeszat drove in the game-winner with a sacrifice fly to right. Each team had nine hits in the game.

McMurry University attacked with 13 runs over the first three innings in its midweek road contest against Southwestern, sailing past the Pirates by a 16-9 final Tuesday evening in Georgetown, Texas. The War Hawks (13-15) jumped to a substantial lead in the second inning with 10 runs in the second inning, erasing a 3-2 deficit after one frame. McMurry never looked back from there, keeping the Pirates (10-14) at bay. A trio of underclassmen emerged with big days at the plate, including sophomore Blake Beach with two RBI singles to score three runs in the second inning. Freshman centerfielder Koy Carpenter led the way with four hits from the leadoff spot, including three singles and a double, while scoring three runs. Freshman catcher Logan Mercer joined Beach with three hits, including an RBI triple.

The ball was flying on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at Paolino Field as Roger Williams University played Salve Regina University to an 11-11 tie before the game was called due to darkness. In a chippy, see-saw affair, that saw ten different pitchers, four ties, three home runs, and a whopping 48 baserunners across just under four hours of baseball, the hard-fought contest disappointingly resulted in a draw.

Wilson College traveled to take on the Colonels of Wilkes University in a non-conference doubleheader earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (16-7, 4-2 CSAC) split their series with the Colonels (14-9, 2-7 MAC), taking the first game 12-0, but dropping the second game 12-11. Wilson lit up the scoreboard in game one with 12 runs on 11 hits with one error, while allowing zero runs on three hits. Fifth-year Jacob Whittington and sophomore Ben Tunnell came in for relief, striking out a combined four batters. A crooked number by Wilson in the fourth inning was not enough as Wilkes went on to win the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Colonels a 12-11 win.

Baruch recorded a season-high in both hits (13) and runs (14) for a 14-5 win against SUNY Old Westbury on Tuesday night. The Bearcats set the tone early with a six-run second inning to jump ahead 6-1. They added two more in the fourth and four in the fifth inning for the solid non-conference win. David Sierra Perez earned the win in relief with six innings pitched, allowing four hits, one earned run, while striking out two. Brian Hwang was tops at the plate batting 4-for-5, with two runs scored and an RBI. Joseph Cocozza batted 3-for-5, with three RBI. He smacked a triple to score Hwang in the second inning.

Bethany College traveled north to take on the Thiel College Tomcats Tuesday afternoon and took home a 8-3 win. In the seventh, the Bison scored four runs to take the lead, 4-3. Cory Newman hit a sacrifice fly to score Blackstone. Kevin Pollock singled to score Whiteherse and Dezmond Franklin giving Bison the lead. In the eighth, the Bison continued to pour on runs, adding four runs to take an 8-3 lead. Schaub scored on a wild pitch then Hubert singled to score Blackstone. Newman doubled to score two more Bison runs. Mark Lavezza pitched a complete game to earn his fifth win of the season. He had seven strikeouts.

After 17 straight road games to start the year, it was good to be home. Sophomore Jack Brennan hit a three-run home run and senior Jared Pantalony earned his first collegiate win in the Bates baseball team's 6-4 victory over Plymouth State Tuesday at Leahey Field. In their home opener, the Bobcats (4-14) jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Panthers (7-14) and hung on from there for the win. Bates tallied 10 hits in the contest and Christopher McGrail, Jared Pantalony (1-0), and Jack Potash combined to hold the Panthers to just four hits. Tyler Attal and Christopher Cimino recorded two hits apiece at the top of the order. Every Bates hitter reached base at least once in the contest.

William Paterson (13-8) opened up an early lead at St. Joseph's-Long Island (9-5) April 5, cruising to an 11-4 victory. Chris Liriano went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Dan Carter finished 2-for-3 while adding a double, RBI and run. Freshman Nick Durso tossed 6.0 innings during his first collegiate start, scattering five hits, one run and four walks while striking out three (1-0).

Earning their seventh consecutive win over Illinois Wesleyan University, North Central College scored six unanswered runs over the final five innings to win 9-3 over the Titans on Tuesday evening. Jadein Kotecki picked up the win as he threw 3.1 innings and struck out three over his 14 batters faced. Justin Rios tallied three hits, three RBIs, and two runs on the day while Paul Beverly drove in two.

UMass Boston posted a 5-3 non-conference victory over visiting Endicott College Tuesday afternoon at Monan Park, hanging on for the win as the Gulls attempted to rally from a four-run deficit in the ninth. UMass Boston took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-1 lead and took advantage of the Gulls' lone error in the game to tack on two insurance runs in the eighth. Those runs proved to be huge as the Gulls scored twice in the top of the ninth for the 5-3 final. Joseph Millar drove in a pair of runs with his two-out double down the left field line before advancing to third on a wild pitch. The threat would end with the next batter, as graduate Josh Eastman got Caleb Shpur to ground out to junior Gianni Zarrilli, Jr. to end the game.

UMass-Dartmouth junior DJ Perron registered four hits, including a three-run home run, and a career-high eight runs batted in to power the Corsairs to a 19-2 victory over visiting Rivier University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. UMass Dartmouth collected its second straight victory to improve to 10-8, while the Raiders slipped to 1-17 on the campaign. Perron paced the Corsairs' season-high 15-hit attack, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. The Swansea, Mass. product went 4-for-5 with two extra base hits, a pair of singles, and a hit by pitch for nine total bases. Perron opened the scoring with a three-run shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning, delivered a two-run single in the fourth and bookended the offensive output with a bases-clearing, three-run double down the right field line in the eighth.

Misericordia University got back in the win column with a 21-7 triumph over Susquehanna, Tuesday afternoon at Tambur Field. Connor Maryniak went 2-6 with six RBI and a homer and struck out two in an inning on the mound. Joe Comins went 3-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Jack Regenye finished 2-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base and Jason Sanfilippo went 1-2 with a solo home

 

Top-ranked Marietta College posted a pair of shutout victories over Case Western Reserve University Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers rolled to a 9-0 win in game one and completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the second game. Marietta improves to 21-3 on the season. Case Western falls to 12-13 overall. Seniors Isaac Danford and Griffin Malick combined to pitch the first game shutout for the Pioneers. Danford started and worked 4.1 innings giving up six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Malick (3-0) threw the final 4.2 innings and thast was all Marietta needed. Freshman Zach Marzetz started on the mound for the Pioneers and blanked the Spartans through 4.0 innings. He gave up five hits, walked one and struck out two. Trent Valentine (7-0) retired all three batters he faced in the fifth inning to get the win.

Grove City College earned a 5-4 victory Tuesday afternoon over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Jack Behringer Field. The victory brings Grove City (15-7, 6-3 PAC) to within a game of Westminster (12-6, 7-2 PAC) at the one-third mark of the 27-game loop schedule. Grove City broke a 1-1 tie by scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth inning. Westminster pulled to within 5-4 in the seventh inning but sophomore reliever Nate Hamel and freshman Evan Umland closed out the win by combining for the final eight outs. Senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton went 2 for 4. He gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the second inning when he singled in Rodriguez.

Carroll University defeated Elmhurst University 11-9
in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at
Frame Park on Tuesday afternoon. It was the second
consecutive home-field victory for Carroll, which has
won three of its last four and improved to 3-1 in the
conference standings and 10-12 overall.

No. 17 Arcadia University scored five runs in the eighth inning to pull out an 8-6 win over Stockton University in a non-conference game at Skip Wilson Field on Tuesday. The Knights pushed their winning streak to 12 to improve their record to 22-3. Zach Steiger got the start for the Knights and earned a no decision as he pitched five innings, giving up only two runs on six hits. Gabe Marshall earned his first career win as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Knights. Owen Margolis then entered the game and earned his fourth save of the season to close out the victory for Arcadia.

Arguably one of the clutchest hitters in the program history for Eastern Connecticut State University, graduate outfielder John Mesagno delivered once again in extra innings on Tuesday afternoon against Trinity College at Murren Family Field. After a 0-for-4 start to his day, Mesagno's no-doubt two-run home run to left field off sophomore right-hander Sam Craven put the Warriors (16-2) ahead for good in a back-and-forth game with the Bantams (8-7) en route to a 10-5 victory in 10 innings. Amidst the victory was another big day for senior catcher Matt Malcom who recorded his 100th career hit in a Warrior uniform in a big way with a first-inning double that plated two and gave Eastern an early 2-0 lead. Malcom finished his day going 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs, and scoring once.

Graduate student Nathaniel Cormier drove in the game-winning run with one down in the ninth as Nichols College rallied from a 2-1 ninth-inning deficit to defeat Lasell College 3-2 in non-conference action at the Nichols Baseball Field. Following an error and a wild pitch that brought in freshman Stanley Cipkas with the tying run, Cormier singled to left to bring in freshman William Nath to give the Bison their seventh win of the season. Sophomore Andrew Croteau finished the day with two hits for Nichols while freshman starter Ben Weber fanned eight in 5.1 innings of work. The win went to senior Brendan Duffy, who tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first dub of 2022.

Ithaca College made its Freeman Field debut on Tuesday afternoon and continued to roll with an 13-7 triumph over Hamilton College. The Bombers collected 14 combined hits in what was the first meeting between the two teams since 1998. IC moved to 15-5 with the win, while Hamilton falls to .500 with a 9-9 overall record. Grad student Buzz Shirley has gotten off to a blistering start to his 2022 campaign, as the slugger went 3-for-4 at the dish with a solo homerun and four RBI. Buoyed by a big three-run home run in the second, sophomore left fielder Louis Fabbo went 2-for-3. Freshman Connor Pedersen also helped fuel Ithaca's offense, going 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, and a stolen base.

Ramapo College played to a 6-6 tie today on the road at Drew University in non-conference action. The game was called after nine full innings of play due to darkness. The Roadrunners now stand at 8-9-1 overall while the Rangers move to 3-20-1 overall. Brian Baranok then tied the game with a sac fly to center field which allowed TJ Rowan to score with the game tying run. The Roadrunners held the Rangers in the bottom of the ninth, turning a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning before the game was called due to darkness.

Matt Vaccaro single to score Tyler Lewandowski from second in the bottom of the ninth as Keuka College defeated SUNY Poly 4-3 in walkoff fashion at Kuhl Field on Tuesday afternoon. Lewandowski singled earlier that inning to tie the game at 3-3 for Keuka College (7-8-1, 1-2-1 Empire 8). Both Vaccaro and Lewandowski had multi-hit games for Keuka in support of Jared Beckley. The sophomore threw 6.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Suffolk bounced back into the win column with an impressive offensive output as the Rams bats struck for 18 hits en route to a 16-2 win over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at J. Tec White Field Tuesday afternoon. Suffolk fell in a 2-run hole but got offense get going in the third. Things got lopsided in the eighth when the Rams exploded for six runs on seven hits and one Gordon miscue. Billy Beneke made his collegiate debut to close things out. The freshman shook off some jitters that allowed two Fighting Scots to reach on walks, before the right-hander retired the side to wrap up the conference contest. Michael Muscarella earned the decision behind a two-run, four-hit, two-walk, four-strikeout effort over 6.0 innings.

Three Loggers homered – including Dylan Joyce's 10th blast of the season – as Puget Sound split a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Lewis & Clark on Logger Field Tuesday afternoon. The three-game series was originally scheduled for April 2-3. A date for the third game is TBD. Shane Himeda set the tone with a solo home run in the first inning, and Puget Sound totaled a season-high 17 hits in its 15-1 win over the Pioneers. The Loggers erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning – including Dylan Joyce's 10th home run of the season – as Puget Sound ran away with a 15-1 win in the second game against Lewis & Clark.

Another game, another walk-off for the WPI baseball team, who upended Emerson 11-10 on Tuesday night as Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs with a two-out single to centerfield as the Engineers walked away with their first NEWMAC victory of the season and third walk-off win in 2022.   With the win, WPI improves to 11-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action while the Lions slip to 8-9 on the season and 2-1 in NEWMAC play.
