Senior Ryan McCarty tied the NCAA Division III single game record for most home runs as he belted four in game two as Penn State Abington recorded the three-game sweep over Gallaudet University in the final United East Conference doubleheader of the season The Nittany Lions won game one, 12-1, and took game two by the score of 21-9. McCarty finished the day 9-for-10 with six runs and 10 RBI. His four home runs increased his D-III lead to 27 on the year. With his 10 RBI between the two games, McCarty surpassed 200 RBI for his career and now has 204.

 

Lawrence University jumped on Knox College early
Saturday and romped to a 14-2 Midwest Conference
victory over the Prairie Fire. Lawrence led 2-1 when
it exploded for nine runs in the second inning to pull
away. The Vikings also got a stellar pitching
performance from ace Quinn Berglin, who tossed six
innings of two-hit ball to earn the victory. Lawrence
piled up 13 hits, led by Zach Leslie, who went 2-for-4
with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Paker
Knoll was 2-for-2, walked three times, scored three
runs and drove in a run. Preston Anderson was 2-for-4
with two RBIs, and Jeffery Cambra (pictured) was
2-for-3, scored three runs and drove in a pair.

St. John Fisher College continued its run through the Empire 8 on Saturday after sweeping both ends of a doubleheader, 11-0 and 8-2, against the Keuka College Wolves. With the wins, Fisher, which has already won the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship and earned the right to host the postseason tournament, improved to 24-12 on the year and 16-2 in league play while the Wolves fell to 15-17-1 overall and 7-10-1 in the Empire 8 standings. Alec Teska extended his scoreless inning streak after the senior held Keuka to just four hits over five shutout innings. The Cato native, who has not surrendered a run in his last 31.0 innings, improved to 5-3 on the year and finished with three strikeouts.

It was a battle on Saturday during the MIAA doubleheader between Adrian College and the Alma College Scots. The Bulldogs came away with a pair of victories in a 7-5 win in game one and an 8-6 win in game two. The 7-5 victory in game one was the 750th career win for head coach Craig Rainey who is in his 29th season as head coach at Adrian College. Gage Ricker got the win in relief for the Bulldogs in game one as he moves to 1-0 on the season. Joe Toth went 5.1 innings in his start allowing four runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Jacob Hanoian picked up his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Jacob Hanoian picked up his sixth save of the season and the 12th of his career to sit one save behind the Adrian career save record of 13 set by Chris Dubbs from the year of 1994-97. Maxwell Denny got the start in game two lasting only three innings allowing two runs on four hits. Luc St. Antoine moved to 3-0 on the season with the win in relief after throwing three innings allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

William Paterson (26-13, 12-6 NJAC) secured a New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament first-round home game thanks to an 8-10, 15-12 Senior Day split against New Jersey City (13-26, 4-14 NJAC). Third-seeded WP will host fourth-seeded Kean (29-11, 12-6 NJAC) in the first round of the double-elimination tourney Tuesday. The Gothic Knights score crooked numbers in three innings of game one to secure the win in the opener. NJCU took a lead in game two but a Pioneer six run fifth game William Paters a lead they would hold.

Penn State Altoona put the finishing touches on its 2022 regular season schedule with a sweep of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille College on Saturday afternoon at Buffalo Color Park. Penn State Altoona (17-19, 8-8 AMCC) held on for a 9-6 victory in game one, then overcame a six-run deficit to win game two 11-7 over Medaille (1-20, 0-12 AMCC). The Lions have clinched a berth to the AMCC Tournament as the number six seed in the six-team conference playoff. Penn State Altoona will travel next weekend to face the to-be-determined number three seed – either Alfred State College or Mount Aloysius College – in a best-of-three first round series. The date, start time, and opponent for that series will be announced when the final seeding of the AMCC Tournament field is set.

Muhlenberg finished its 2022 season by splitting a pair of one-run games at McDaniel. The Mules (16-21, 5-13) came back to win the opener, 4-3 in 11 innings, before dropping the nightcap, 6-5. Muhlenberg scored the winning run after two were out and nobody on base in the top of the 11th. Sophomore Nick Whelan drew a five-pitch walk, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored when junior Christian Schwarz hit a sharp single up the middle. Senior Will Nomura retired the side in order in the bottom of the 11th, striking out the final batter he faced to complete a five-inning scoreless stint out of the bullpen. Nomura struck out five in improving to 4-1 on the season. The lead changed hands four times in the second game. Muhlenberg turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead in the second on a two-run double by freshman Aidan Legner and an RBI single by sophomore Nick Belli. The Green Terror scored three of their own in third to retake the lead in the third, but the Mules went back on top at 5-4 on back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the sixth. McDaniel scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Junior Joey Saia hit two home runs, including a grand slam to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to an 11-3 victory over Union College, on Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. The Engineers, who dropped the nightcap, 2-1, are now 13-16 overall (5-10 Liberty League), while the Dutchmen move to 14-15 (8-9 Liberty League). RPI scored the first nine runs of Game 1, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one and a 4-0 advantage after two. Saia extended the RPI lead to 11-3 in the top of the ninth, roping his second home run of the game and fourth of the season over the fence in left. The two-run shot also plated Rainer, who had reached for the third time in the game. In the nightcap, Union never trailed after scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a solo homer from Kobe Mentzer.

It was a tale of two games in WPI's doubleheader with Clark on Saturday afternoon. Game one featured a nail biting one-run game while the bats came alive in the series finale. The Engineers (15-18, 5-12 NEWMAC) earned the first win of the day, coming away with a 7-6 victory while Clark (16-16, 5-12) earned a 16-10 win in the final game of the weekend and the NEWMAC schedule. WPI starter Alexander Mondro (Westford, MA) earned the win for WPI, his second of the year with a five inning outing allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four. Noah Pins picked up the save, his third of the year, pitching the ninth. Clark reliever Benjamin Spencer who stepped into the ballgame in the third inning of action picked up the win pitching four innings in game two. The two teams combined for 47 hits on the day in the doubleheader, though the pitching staffs also combined for 26 strikeouts between the two games.

Ithaca College took two crucial Liberty League West victories over Clarkson University, 5-3 and 4-1, on Saturday at Freeman Field. The wins vault Ithaca's overall record to 24-10 and 9-2 in the West, as well as 12-4 in Liberty League play. Clarkson is now 9-16 on the season and 3-7 in the division. The Bombers head into their final Liberty League game tomorrow with a one-game lead over Rochester, as well as the tiebreak for the top seed out of the West heading into next weekend's crossover series. Garrett Bell earned his sixth win of the year in 3.0 innings of relief as he struck out three batters and allowed two runs on two hits. Lambert fanned five and gave up one run on two hits and four walks in a no decision. Nate Scott never faced more than four batters in a single inning during his 89-pitch complete game in the nightcap. Scott allowed one run on five hits and struck out one batter. He also made a highlight reel diving catch on a bunt attempt in the fifth inning to put the exclamation point on his outing.

Following a loss to Brevard on April 2, Covenant stood at 10-15 overall and 2-7 in USA South action. Fast forward four weeks and the Scots turned their season around and are headed to the USA South Tournament as the No. 3 West seed. Covenant won its seventh straight game and completed a three-game sweep of Berea with a 12-4 victory on the road on Saturday to conclude the regular season. The win was the 11th in the last 13 games for Covenant (21-17, 10-8 USA South) as the Scots went 8-1 in the final nine USA South games to climb into the tournament and finish third in the West Division. The Scots will head to the No. 1 West seed for a four-team, double-elimination bracket starting on Thursday, May 5. To ensure no tiebreaker was needed to get into the tournament, the Scots had to finish off a sweep of Berea on Saturday.

Misericordia University wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader split at Delaware Valley, Saturday. MU took the opener, 8-4, but the Aggies scored in each of the last two innings to win the nightcap, 2-1. Austin Miles had four hits in the opener while Garrett McIlhenney, Derrick Vosburg, Brock Bollinger and Connor Maryniak all had three hits as part of 20-hit attack. Joe Valenti struck out seven over six innings to earn the win. Vosburg had two hits in the nightcap and Maryniak had an RBI. Misericordia is 26-14 and clinched the second in the MAC Freedom Championships. They will host Stevens in a three-game series beginning Friday.

Freshman Aaron Lautenschlager had five hits and six RBI as Randolph-Macon split an ODAC doubleheader at Ferrum on Saturday afternoon. RMC won the opener 10-5 but dropped the nightcap 5-4. After a scoreless first, the Yellow Jackets took control of the game in the second. The Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the eighth as Matt Myers reached on an error and scored on a single by Hunter Cole to make the final 10-5. The second game was a see-saw affair but Ferrum scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to earn the doubleheader split.

Hardin-Simmons split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Sul Ross State on Saturday at Hunter Field, winning 5-4 in the first game and falling 16-4 in the regular-season finale. HSU (21-19 overall and 14-16 in ASC play) advances to the American Southwest Conference Tournament next weekend in Richardson. The sixth-seeded Cowboys will take on Belhaven in the opening round at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The Cowboys had a long day of celebration as the groundbreaking ceremony before the first game of the new Hunter Family / Powell Family Indoor Facility and a ring presentation to the 1982 Trans America Athletic Conference champion team happened before the game.

New England College closed out New England Collegiate Conference action today with a sweep of Lesley University, 6-1 and 5-2, which locked up the top seed in the upcoming NECC Tournament next weekend. Devin Parsons got the Pilgrims on the board in the top of the second inning, as he doubled home JD Normand. New England College expanded their lead in the top of the sixth, as Parsons scored on an Sylvain Audet single to left field, while Tyler Gendron drove in Audet with a double to left. Shaun Cormier picked up his fifth win of the year, as he struck out seven over 7.0 innings. New England College regained the game two lead in the third inning and held it for the win. Alex Perez picked up the win for NEC, as he pitched 5.0 innings with six strikeouts and just two hits. After tossing a no-hit bottom of the seventh, Corey O'Day notched his sixth save of the season.

McMurry University had much to celebrate this weekend, wrapping up the regular season Saturday with two dramatic wins over Concordia Texas to finish a three-game sweep at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks extended an eight-game winning streak Saturday and also locked up the No. 4 seed in the American Southwest Conference tournament, as they will play No. 5 Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, May 5 at 3 p.m. in Marshall, Texas. McMurry finishes the regular season 23-16 overall and 17-13 in the ASC – its first winning season since 2015 as an independent. The team will also compete in its first ASC Championship Tournament since 2012 – one year prior to its transition in and later out of NCAA Division II. Meanwhile, Concordia Texas finishes 14-23 overall and 13-17 in the conference and owns the No. 7 seed in the tournament.

The SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles finished the season 12-0 at home and maintained their 24 home game-winning streak after the weekend SUNYAC series sweep of SUNY New Paltz. On Saturday Brockport defeated the Hawks in game 1 of the doubleheader 14-4 followed by a 5-0 shutout in game 2. In one of the most impressive displays of baseball came from Brockport's home run king Tom Kretzler. Kretzler not only threw six innings on the mound while striking out a total of four batters while only allowing two runs to score but also finished the day 5-6 at the plate with four home runs and a double along with nine RBIs. Putting together an impressive week, in five games, Kretzler went 12-19 with 17 RBIs, 11 extra-base hits, seven home runs, three doubles, and one triple. Kretzler's four home runs today put him at 34 for his career and give him 13 home runs alone this season, a new Brockport baseball single-season program record that was previously held with 10 home runs by Craig Brown (1999) and Glenn Dow (1991).

FSC junior right fielder Bobby Pollock hit a solo home run in the eighth inning of game one to propel the Rams to a 5-4 win in Saturday afternoon's Skyline Conference doubleheader. The Rams (21-11, 13-5 Skyline) used a three-run fifth inning in the nightcap to complete the sweep of the Mariners (21-17, 11-7), scoring a 5-2 decision to pick up their 10th victory in their last 11 contests. With one out in the top of the eighth, Pollock drew a 2-1 count before drilling a home run over the right field fence to put the Rams in front, 5-4. In game two, the Rams then scored three more unanswered runs in the fifth, taking a 5-2 edge that it would not relinquish.

St. Joseph's University (L.I.) wrapped up its Skyline Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Purchase at Gregg Alfano Field on Saturday afternoon. The wins move the Golden Eagles to 18-11 on the season with a 15-5 Skyline mark. The Panthers slide to 11-21 overall, 7-11 Skyline. St. Joseph's starter Kevin Czeczotka (W, 4-2) picked up his fourth win of the season allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out five in six innings of work. Ryan Foran tossed a scoreless seventh with one strikeout. SJLI's Charles Aurandt (W, 4-0) got the win allowing just one hit with five strikeouts.

TCNJ split its regular season-ending doubleheader at Ramapo on Saturday, solidifying its spot as the No. 5 seed in next week's NJAC Tournament. The Lions took game one, 3-1, before losing in game two, 14-8. The Lions will play on the road Tuesday in the first round of the double-elimination tournament at Montclair State. The remaining rounds of the tournament will be played at Kean next weekend. The TCNJ pitching staff continued its string of strong performances as Jordan Gray tossed seven innings of two-hit baseball while striking out five. Gray threw 5.1 innings without allowing a hit, and he got the final two outs of the sixth inning without allowing a run to cross. The tide turned towards the offenses and the Roadrunners in game two. The Lions opted for a bullpen game, and Ramapo scored six runs in the first three innings before breaking the game open late.

The University of Rochester used a four-run final inning to earn a game two victory, salvaging a doubleheader split against the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. The host Tigers took the opener by a 9-4 score, scoring eight runs in their final two at-bats to power past Rochester, with the Yellowjackets earning a 4-2 victory in game two. Rochester remains in first place in the overall Liberty League standings with a 13-3 record in conference games, sitting at 26-9 overall. RIT moves to 17-16 overall and is 7-9 in the conference.

Husson University stretched their winning streak to ten games with a North Atlantic Conference sweep of the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers on Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Diamond. The Eagles won game one, 11-2, in seven innings before winning game two, 13-3, in nine innings. The Eagles (19-15, 11-1 NAC) scored three runs in the second and third inning en route to a 11-2 victory over the Beavers (8-23, 6-8 NAC) in game one. Freshman Tanner Evans led the offensive charge as he went 4-for-4 as he drove in two runs. Like game one, the Beavers opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. The Eagles responded with 13 straight runs to record the game two victory. Evans continued his hot day at the plate as he had three hits and four runs driven in while Ty Knowlton drove in two runs on three hits.

Nichols College swept a key home Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader, 10-3 and 4-3, from Suffolk University Saturday on Senior Day at the Nichols Baseball Field. Senior DJ Caron went 4-for-5 with a two-run triple and four RBI while classmate Victor Valentin picked up a run-scoring single and double in a seven-run win. After sophomore Brennan Hyde tied the game with a home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth, Ellis smacked his second round tripper of the season as the Bison walked off the Rams and improved to 17-15-1 on the season (7-7-1 CCC).

Sophomore Luke Sokolski hit a pair of homers and junior Griffin Crane and sophomore Joshua Welsh also went deep in game one as Plymouth State University earned a doubleheader split at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in Little East Conference action on Saturday. The Panthers relied on the long ball in the opener, slamming four dingers as part of a 12-hit effort in a 14-0, seven-inning win. Sokolski went deep twice and doubled, scoring three runs and driving in four, while junior Trey Parker tossed another gem surrendering just five hits over his six shutout innings. PSU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in game two, but the Corsairs tied the game in the fourth and went ahead in the eighth. Plymouth State’s first two batters reached in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but UMD retired the next three hitters in order to hold on for the 7-4 win.

Junior pitcher Shaun Gamelin earned a three-inning save as Rhode Island College split a Little East doubleheader with UMass Boston (5-3; 5-7) at Pontarelli Field on Saturday afternoon. RIC would manufacture a few runs over the next couple innings, tying the game in the bottom of the sixth, 3-3. Freshman first baseman Daniel Trzepacz stepped up in the bottom of the sixth and squeaked a single past Blake, which scored two and gave the Anchormen a 5-3 lead. Gamelin would come on in the seventh inning and shut the door, notching six strikeouts over three perfect innings to close out the win. The second game was a pitchers' duel until the top of the fifth inning, when a RIC error allowed two Beacons to cross the plate. UMB would add two more runs in the next inning, making the game 4-0 after the top of the sixth. In the seventh inning, with RIC down, 4-1, Trzepacz sent a ball over the fence to tie the game up, 4-4. However, in the top of the next inning, UMB junior shortstop Gianni Zarrilli Jr. (South Glastonbury, Conn.) took back all momentum, hitting a two-run homer to give the visitors a 6-4 lead in the eighth inning.

Catholic University senior Peter Giombetti and junior Nick Koehn combined for seven hits and nine RBIs as the Cardinals swept a doubleheader at Susquehanna Saturday. Catholic (27-10, 13-4 LC) totaled 24 runs on 29 hits as the team guaranteed itself a conference series win for the fourth time in six matchups this season. Giombetti totaled three hits with a grand slam, two walks and six RBIs. His grand slam in the fifth inning in game one was his 13th home run of the season, adding to his Catholic single-season record. With 13 home runs, Giombetti moved into second place for a single season in Landmark Conference history along with Scranton's Chris Bligh (2010) and Merchant Marine's Davey May (2009). Juniata's Dan Kauffman holds the record with 14 in 2008. Meanwhile, Koehn was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs in game two.
