PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Three home runs powered the University of Rochester to a game one victory over St. Lawrence University, and sophomore Jackson Reed completed the sweep with a walk off single in game two of a Liberty League doubleheader on Friday at Towers Field.

Rochester (23-4, 10-0 Liberty League) took game one by an 8-4 score, backed by another strong pitching performance from sophomore Nolan Sparks. In game two, the Yellowjackets Colby Cruser tossed six no-hit innings before the Saints (13-10, 4-7 Liberty League) touched UR for two runs in the top of the seventh. Reed's heroics in the bottom of the inning gave the Yellowjackets a 3-2 win.

The wins push Rochester's winning streak to 13 games, the longest UR winning streak since the 2015 season when the Yellowjackets earned 17 straight victories.

In game one, Rochester's power surge came quick, with both John Moses and Aaron Whitley slugging two-run homers to left in the first two innings. Harper Sy added an RBI groundout in the first and the Yellowjackets were up 5-0 through two.

Joseph Rende made it 6-0 in the fifth with the 'Jackets third home run of the contest, a solo blast to right.

Rochester's Sparks was rolling through the first four innings, giving up just one hit over that span. The Saints got the first two batters on in the fifth, but three straight outs, including two via the strikeout ended the threat.

Now trailing 7-0, St. Lawrence broke through in the seventh inning with back-to-back solo home runs from Andrew Circelli and Caleb Clark. UR's Brian McKinsey got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame, doubling in Sy.

In the eighth against reliever Jason Cobert, another St. Lawrence long ball, this one a two-run shot from Nicholas Butler, trimmed the lead back to four.

The Saints tried to mount a rally in the ninth thanks to a UR throwing error and infield single, but Cobert dug in and struck out three straight batters to end the contest in style.

Whitley finished the game hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. He becomes the third player this season to accomplish the feat, joining Rende and Jacob Matzat, to hit for a single, double, triple and home run in the same game.

McKinsey went 2-for-5 with a double and triple, while Sy added another 2-hit performance.

On the mound, Sparks (5-0) tossed seven innings and allowed five hits and two runs while walking one and striking out five. Cobert struck out four in his two innings of relief.

Game two was a terrific pitchers duel between UR's Cruser and SLU's Jack Sylvia, with the teams managing just three hits combined over the first six innings. Cruser ended the game giving up one run and one walk while striking out eight.

Rochester's first-year hurler pitched six innings of no-hit ball, yielding just one hit, an infield single to Chris Watson in the seventh.

With the Yellowjackets clinging to just a 1-0 lead after a Reed solo home run in the third inning, Rochester went to closer Thomas Karpishin after the lone hit against Cruser.

Karpishin came in and gave up a ground-rule double to Butler to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. The next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

A walk to Circelli, tied the score and after a strikeout, Jake Delaney laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to drive in the go ahead run, putting the Saints up 2-1. Karpishin earned a strikeout to limit the damage and strand the other two runners on second and third.

Now in the lead, St. Lawrence decided to keep its starter Sylvia on the hill for the seventh. Luke Piontek led off with a walk for Rochester, and on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Matt Cappelletti, the ball was thrown away, allowing runners to sit at the corners with none out.

McKinsey walked to load the bases and after pinch-hitter Moses struck out, Reed laced a 3-2 pitch into left center, plating the winning runs.

Karpishin (2-1) earned the win for Rochester, his second of the season. Slyvia (2-4) tossed 6.1 innings and allowed four hits and three runs while striking out four and walking one.

The same two teams meet tomorrow to close the series, with Saturday's game being scheduled for a 1 pm start.
