Cary, N.C. – Penn State Abington senior Ryan McCarty was named a semifinalist for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award as announced by the organization on Tuesday.  McCarty is one of 31 semifinalists that are now in the running to being named the top amateur baseball player of the year.  The 44th Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 24 on ESPN.

The United East Conference (UEC) Player of the Year finished the 2022 campaign in historic fashion.  McCarty currently leads Division III in batting (.529), hits (100), runs (89), RBI (91), total bases (220) and slugging percentage (1.164).  He's ranked second nationally with 27 doubles.  McCarty set the Division III single season record with 220 total bases and his 89 runs tied the single season mark.  In addition, McCarty is just the second Division III player to record 100-plus hits in a single season.

In the team's final regular season game, McCarty tied the Division III record for most home runs in a game as he launched four homers in game two of a doubleheader versus Gallaudet University.  In that game against the Bison, McCarty went 6-for-7 at the plate with four runs and a career-high nine RBI.

On the mound, McCarty appeared in 13 games during the season and sported a 4-2 record with four saves.  In 26.1 innings of work, McCarty struck out 21 batters.

In addition to being named United East Player of the Year, McCarty was also selected to the All-UEC 1st team for the fourth time in his career (formerly the NEAC).  His career resume also includes being named the 2018 NEAC Rookie of the Year as well as the 2019 NEAC Pitcher of the Year.  McCarty is also a two-time D3Baseball.com Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection and a two-time ABCA/Rawlings Mid-Atlantic All-Region honoree.  In 2018, McCarty was named the Division III D3Baseball.com Rookie of the Year and became the program's first All-American.

In 162 career games played, McCarty is the program's all-time leader in average (.439), hits (284), doubles (77), triples (11), home runs (42), RBI (210), runs (222) and walks (94).

Beginning with the announcement of the semifinalists, a ballot will be sent to a voting body consisting of baseball media members, select professional baseball personnel and USA Baseball staff, and the previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 150 voters. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. On June 8, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting for the winner will begin that same day.
