Tufts doubles up Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday

Tufts took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run shot by Ben Leonard, and never looked back as the Jumbos increased their win streak to 11 with a 6-3 win over visiting Eastern Nazarene College in non-conference play from Sol Gittleman Park Tuesday night. Tufts, ahread by one run, added another run in the fourth inning, as the Jumbos used a double steal to score Jimmy Evans from third base after he doubled earlier in the frame. The Jumbos then scored three more runs in the seventh inning, as Jesse McCullough singled in a run to make it 4-1. Later in the inning, Evans doubled off the right-field wall to plate McCullough and Bowman came through with another RBI single to push the Tufts lead up to 6-1. Eastern Nazarene attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the eighth inning, scoring two but that was all they would get as the Jumbos held on for the win.

Emory closed out the 2023 regular season on a powerful note Tuesday afternoon, defeating No. 19 ranked LaGrange College 10-6 in Atlanta. The Eagles end the season winners of 18 of their final 21 games to finish with an overall record of 28-11 and conclude the home slate with a 19-5 record at the friendly confines of Chappell Park. It marks the eighth most wins at home in a season and the most since the 2007 club went 23-1 in Atlanta. LaGrange drops its third straight game and heads into its final series of the regular season at 25-12 overall. As has been the case all year, the Eagles used the home run ball to muscle past the Panthers on Tuesday, launching four no doubters in the win. It is the sixth time this season Emory totaled three or more home runs in a game and now sit at 48 home runs through 39 games – the ninth most by a team in Division III this season and two shy of the program single-season record of 50 set in 1998.

Wilmington pounded out 16 hits in a 16-2 victory in seven innings over Berea College in non-conference action from Tewksbury-Delaney Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Quakers scored early and often, opening with a run in the first on a Jared Lammert singled home Tyler Shaneyfelt, the program's career and single-season leader in runs scored. The big innings came in the second and fourth where Wilmington batted around. Zach Shepherd improved to 3-0 during his freshman campaign, scattering five hits with seven strikeouts in five innings. Isaac Ross and Dawson Blunt both pitched an inning in relief for the Quakers. Christian Ortiz pitched a single inning for Berea and took the loss in a bullpen day for the Mountaineers. Owen Baumann finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

In its final non-conference action of the season, Penn State Altoona split a doubleheader with Penn College on Tuesday afternoon at Stewart Athletic Field. Penn College (19-16) hung on to win game one 10-8, while Penn State Altoona (15-22) bounced back with an 11-4 victory in the nightcap. A late comeback attempt by Penn State Altoona fell short, as the Lions were unable to overcome a pair of six-run deficits and ultimately lost by two. Penn State Altoona scored nine runs over the game's first three innings and never looked back, defeating the Wildcats by seven in game two.

Benedictine tallied a second straight conference sweep, swinging to 12-3 and 10-1 wins over Edgewood in a pair of key contests that pushed the team closer to clinching a first round bye in the conference tournament. Benedictine scored in five different innings in the opener, building an 8-0 lead. Jackson Bahn allowed just one hit in six innings of work, striking out eight. The second contest saw Benedictine score twice in the top of the first and plate runs in five different frames while opening a 10-0 lead. Fisher and Wilson notched RBI singles in the first inning. Ryan Doubek finished 4-for-6 out of the leadoff slot.

No. 5 nationally ranked Endicott defeated Suffolk, 10-8, on Tuesday evening in conference action at East Boston Memorial Park. Joseph Millar, Caleb Shpur, Kyle Grabowski, and John Mulready all produced multi-hit performances for the Gulls. Suffolk made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth by scoring three runs, but Max Tarlin eventually worked out of the no-out bases loaded jam by sandwiching a sac fly in between a pair of strikeouts to lock up the victory. The comeback attempt from the Rams seemed fitting given how the last 10 games in the all-time series have played out as six of those contests have ended with a differential of three runs or less (four 1-run games).

Six different pitchers and three home runs helped a well-balanced Loras attack outpace the UW-Platteville 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Petrakis Park. The Duhawks (22-12) caught fire in the middle innings to put some separation between themselves and the Pioneers (10-21), sending them to a victory over Platteville in the first game played in the series since 2016. Nick DiBenedetto was last in a line of six Loras pitchers that combined to hold the Pioneers to just seven hits, two runs, and one earned run in the game. Freshman Jake Fenton made his collegiate debut with a hitless fourth inning to put himself in line for the victory.

Every starter had at least one hit and No. 12 Eastern Connecticut State University batted around three times and went on to a 16-1, seven-inning Little East Conference win over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium. The win gives Eastern (26-7, 10-3 LEC) at least ten wins in the LEC regular season for the 20th time in 26 years and improves the defending national champions' record to 43-5 in the Little East regular season over the last three years. Against Western, Eastern had 20 hits to equal its highest hit total this year. The Warriors batted around in each of the first two innings, scoring nine runs on seven hits, four walks, four stolen bases, two outfield errors, a balk and sacrifice fly.

17th-ranked Catholic snapped a four-game skid with a dominant 16-3 road victory at Stevenson on Tuesday in a non-conference showdown. Sophomore designated hitter Mitchel Johnson was dominant at the plate, going 4-4 with two doubles, a home run, and four RBIs. Johnson was one of six players with multiple hits as Catholic racked up 17 knocks on the day. Danny Prior got the start and tossed 5.0 innings of three-run ball before four pitchers combined for four scoreless innings to close out the victory. Catholic sits at 24-7 on the season with seven scheduled games remaining on the schedule. The Cardinals are 11-3 in Landmark play with four games remaining.

Backed by two home runs from Nick Harvey and six-plus solid innings from starter Billy Moeller, SUNY New Paltz went on the road and earned a 6-4 win over Ramapo College Tuesday. SUNY New Paltz broke the stalemate in the top of the third, eventually extending the advantage to 5-0. The Roadrunners made the game interesting in the ninth, as a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch gave Ramapo life, as a double brought the difference down to two. Ryan anchored in though, limiting the damage and getting the final out on a strikeout swinging to secure the victory. Nick Harvey had a day, going 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI with a double and two home runs. Mike Ascano followed, hitting 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Billy Moeller allowed four hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and six walks.

Stockton (20-16, 6-8 NJAC) reached the 20-win mark for the first time since 2013, with a close 8-7 win over FDU-Florham (7-29) on Tuesday afternoon. Jordan Nitti garnered two of the eight hits for Stockton on the day. Stockton loaded the bases again in the ninth inning and scored on a wild pitch, that turned out to be key in the inning. The home team rallied with four runs in the bottom of the frame, but could not push across another marker, stranding the tying run at first base, as Stockton held on for the 8-7 victory. Antonio Gatti and Max Kaplan scored two runs each in the game, with Kaplan walking three times and blasting a double. Stockton used seven different hurlers on the day with Phil Santa Maria earning his first win of the season with two innings of scoreless work. Kyle Cipolla earned his first save of the year.

North Central College starting pitcher Justin Rios made quick work of the Concordia-Chicago offense in his eight-inning outing on Tuesday night at Zimmerman Stadium as the Cardinals won 5-1 for their ninth consecutive victory. Rios threw eight innings, allowing just three hits and one run as he picked up his first win of the season. Lehnen led all batters with two hits, two runs, and two RBIs. Dom Listi's hit in the first inning of the game extended his on-base streak to 68 games, the third longest in NCAA Division III history.

The UW-Superior Yellowjacket is in the midst of a very special stretch of baseball. After shutting out Martin Luther three times over the weekend, the Yellowjackets entered play Tuesday with a shutout streak of 30 innings, spanning four games. They looked to keep that streak, as well as a four-game winning streak alive as they hosted Northland Tuesday. In a game completed in a snappy one hour, 46 minutes, the Yellowjackets kept both streaks intact, defeating the LumberJacks 3-0 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. Sophomore Riley Harbaugh got the start on the mound for the Yellowjackets and completely shut the Northland offense down. The Oregon native didn't give up a hit to the LumberJacks until the leadoff hitter singled in the top of the sixth inning. Harbaugh allowed two hits over 7.1 innings and walked two while striking out seven. He got the win, improving to 1-2 on the year.

Chatham swept the Franciscan Barons at home Tuesday afternoon, with two mercy-rule wins of 10-0 and 13-3. The Cougars are now 16-15 on the year and an even 8-8 in PAC play. In game one, Benny Dottle singled for his 47th hit of the season, which set a new Chatham single-season hit record. The previous record of 46 was set by graduate catcher Caleb Lehman in 2021. Tyler Cote went 3-3 in game one with two RBI and two runs scored. Dottle was 3-5 with an RBI and two runs of his own. On the mound, sophomore right hander Dawson Morrow had a gem of a game, with 6.0 scoreless innings pitched. He allowed just four hits and struck out six Barons. Sophomore Kole Mayle shut things down and earned the save in the seventh, with the Cougars winning on the 10-run mercy rule. In game two, Chatham tacked on the final six runs in the seventh to storm ahead to the mercy rule win.

Second baseman Conor Smith picked up three hits on Tuesday afternoon, playing a key role in Lebanon Valley's commanding 10-1 victory against Penn State Berks at McGill Field. Lebanon Valley (21-15-1) received contributions for several players during their big day at the plate, as eight Dutchmen drove in runs during the game. The club's 10-run effort was a product of the lineup generating traffic on the basepaths, coming in the form of 12 hits and eight walks. LVC's pitching staff was also dominant, yielding just one run and striking out a total of 12 Nittany Lions (9-23). Michael Williams started on the mound, fanning a batter in his first outing of the season.

Sophomore Eli Somers set career highs in RBI (5), hits (3) home runs (2), and runs scored (2) as Stevens Institute of Technology defeated New Jersey City University 8-6 Tuesday night in a non-conference contest at Dobbelaar Field. Somers' career day powered the Ducks (25-11) to their third straight win. Stevens is an impressive 15-5 in games played in Hoboken this season. They improved to 10-1 all-time against the Gothic Knights. NJCU (11-24) drops their fifth consecutive game. The Gothic Knights are 0-3 against MAC Freedom teams this season as they lost to FDU-Florham and Wilkes earlier in the season. First-year William Sotiropoulos (3-0) earns yet another win for the Ducks. He pitched five innings in relief, allowing just one run on three hits. He also recorded five strikeouts. Sophomore Joe Gonzalez also featured for the Ducks. He pitched 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits.

Trailing by 10 in the fifth inning, MIT scored 12 unanswered runs to upend WPI 15-13 in a NEWMAC match-up Tuesday at Fran O'Brien Field. Teddy Schoenfeld led MIT with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring three while hitting his fourth homerun of the season. Graham Cartwright finished with three hits, three runs, and two RBI, while Zev Moore and Lawrence Tang each drove in two runs. Ben Burke got the win in relief, going five innings, allowing one run on three hits with 13 strikeouts. For WPI, Jacob Hand was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Kyle Johns and Kyle DeRoma each had two hits and three RBI. Jonathan Lattimer and Liam Keblin also added two RBI each. On the hill, Eric DePiero was tagged with the loss, throwing two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing six runs on seven hits.

Lynchburg took down Hampden-Sydney 11-0 on the road Tuesday afternoon. Brandon Pond made his 7th start on the mound this season for the Hornets. Pond struck out five in four scoreless innings of work, and has sat down 20 batters in 21 innings this season. Baylor Cumbea relieved Pond in the fifth and pitched two scoreless innings. The grad student's efforts were good for his first career win. Alex Gianascoli pitched the final three innings of the contest earning his his first career save.

Clutch pitching and a timely hit helped the Bison to a 1-0 win over Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Western New England on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Nichols improved to 14-18 (8-4 CCC) on the year, while the Golden Bears fell to 20-8-2 (6-4-1 CCC). Chase Rancourt, Richard Pignone, and Patrick Sawyer limited the Golden Bears to just four hits while striking out eight in the process. Karl Miller picked up two hits for the Bison, while also making some impressive catches in centerfield. After the first two batters were set down in the bottom of the third, shortstop Johnny Knox worked a walk, the only of the game for the Bison, and eventually stole second to put himself in scoring position. Falling behind in the count 0-2 before watching a few tough pitches go by, senior Jim Marasco came up clutch for the home team, singling up the middle and scoring Knox to give Nichols the 1-0 advantage.

Down to its final strike, The College of Wooster first-year first baseman Ryan Kramer lifted a game-tying two-run home run just beyond the outstretched glove of a leaping Zachary Mazza in right center at Art Murray Field. After a scoreless 10th inning, the teams halted the game tied at six, and will resume it on Tuesday, May 2 at 3 p.m. at Mount Union, prior to the scheduled non-conference clash between old Ohio Athletic Conference rivals. Junior second baseman Eli Westrick roped his third hit of the clash to start the ninth inning. Mount Union relief ace Chuck Hawley retired the next two Wooster batters and had Kramer down in the count 0-2. Hawley went with the chase pitch and did not get Kramer to bite before this week's North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week locked in for the 1-2 offering. Mount Union threatened in the top of the 10th when Mazza smoked a two-out double to left field. After an intentional walk to put the force at second and third in play, Kramer backpedaled to get to Jaired Lehman's foul fly ball down the right field line for the final out of the inning. Christopher Phillips retired the Scots in order in the bottom of the frame.

First-year Josh Bottger delivered an opposite field single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to score first-year Zachary Pleska with the winning run to lift Lycoming to a 4-2 win and a series sweep of Delaware Valley on Tuesday, April 25, at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. After the Aggies (13-21 overall, 7-14 MAC Freedom) got the first two outs of the eighth inning, Pleska singled into center field before first-year Gehrig Blanchard walked, forcing a pitching change. On the next pitch, Bottger delivered a single into shallow right field to score Pleska and a throwing error allowed Blanchard to score as well.

In a game consisting of 38 combined runs and 34 combined hits, Keystone was able to hang on to defeat Neumann 24-14 Tuesday afternoon at Christy Mathewson Field. Keystone moves to 21-11 with the victory. Neumann drops to 13-19. Giovanni Diaz and Robert Estrada led the Giants bats as the two collectively recorded four hits and eight RBI with each player hitting a home run. Julio Acosta and Chris Hadsall both tallied three hits. Anthony Raimo went 2-for-3 highlighted by a three RBI double. Drew Sorrentino got the start and went three innings with one strikeout. A bunch of Keystone pitchers appeared in relief as Dominic Verrastro was able to pick up his first win of the season. The Giants got hot in the first two innings as they were up 10-2 after two innings. As the contest went on, the Giants started to see their lead diminish as the Knights were starting to make a comeback. At one point, Neumann trailed Keystone by three runs. However, Keystone was able to get back in the swing of things as the squad was able to come away with the victory. There were a total 22 runs scored by both teams in the sixth through eighth inning.

Union registered a season-high 19 hits to get back in the win column with a decisive 11-3 victory over Wesleyan (Conn.) on Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park. Juniors Anthony Ruzzo, Thomas Parisi, and Kobe Mentzer, sophomore Kyle Zaslaw and Dan Sheeran, and first-year Liam McIlroy all registered a multi-hit night for Union. Zaslaw had a career day at the plate, recording his first multi-hit game in a day that saw him go 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Mentzer led the way with a pair of doubles. Mentzer recorded his first career game with multiple extra-base hits after hitting two doubles on the night.

Senior Carter Johnson had three hits and knocked in four, and senior Hunter Cole smacked a grand slam in the seventh, as 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon outscored Virginia Wesleyan 12-5 in ODAC action on Tuesday afternoon. The Marlins tied the game with two in the fifth and took the lead with one in the seventh before RMC exploded in the bottom of the seventh. Cole launched his ninth homer of the season to right, the grand slam putting RMC up 10-5. The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more in the eighth. Schmitt had a one-out single and went to third when Lautenschlager reached on an error. A single by Johnson brought home Schmitt and a sacrifice fly by Webb drove in Lautenschlager to make the final 12-5.

Farmingdale State moved to 7-5 in Skyline Conference play on Tuesday afternoon, as the Rams (15-12) swept a road make-up doubleheader against host Yeshiva. FSC took game one by an 18-1 score, before securing a 27-0 shutout in a seven-inning nightcap. A six-run first inning set the tone for the day for the Rams in game one, including a RBI three-bagger by Sakellarides to drive in junior Jordan Lambert . FSC scored in each of the last five innings, including a three-run fourth that included one RBI each by Lambert, Sakellarides and White, and a four-run seventh frame. Five Farmingdale State pitchers combined on a five-hitter with 16 strikeouts, with junior starter Daniel Molina picking up the victory with three innings of six-strikeout ball. The visitors scored in all seven innings in game two, including eight runs apiece in the third and sixth stanzas, to take full control early and often.

Junior right-hander Thomas Plunkett allowed just one run over seven strong innings and Scranton (20-13) rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Wilkes Colonels (14-23) on Tuesday evening at Volpe Field in Scranton. Plunkett gave up the one run on two hits to go along with a walk and three strikeouts in his 7.0 IP, which matched his career-high that had been set on Apr. 26, 2021 at Susquehanna. The Mamaroneck, N.Y., native retired the final 14 batters that he faced following a one-out double in the third inning. Sophomore righty Connor McElroy Barker (Fanwood, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) was charged with one run on one hit over two innings of relief to close things out for Scranton. With the victory, Scranton also secured a third consecutive 20-win season.
