HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) collected two hits, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 11-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision at home to nationally-ranked No. 6 the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman Sterling Austin (Petersburg) took the pitching setback for the host Tigers (19-16, 12-8) against the visiting Hornets (30-5, 17-3).

H-SC had six hits with two errors. Lynchburg scored 11 runs on 10 hits with no errors … scoring three runs in the third inning, five runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and one run in the ninth. The Hornets got two RBIs each from Benton Jones, Gavin Collins, Jackson Harding and Carrson Atkins.

Austin (2-3) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and three runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) followed with 2.1 innings, yielding four hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Hunter Powell (Ridgeway) tossed 1.0 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Classmate Jake Williams (Chesapeake) pitched a scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Jackson Barnett (Ashland) also tossed a scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Classmate Kyle Woodall (Mechanicsville) pitched the final inning, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.

Baylor Cumbea gained the pitching win in relief, while Alex Gianascoli earned the mound save for Lynchburg.

H-SC will complete the regular season this weekend with an ODAC doubleheader at Bridgewater on Sunday, April 30, beginning at 12 p.m. in Bridgewater.
