LEXINGTON, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team got back in the win column defeating Washington and Lee 10-7 on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles rallied in the first in the first inning to score their first run of the game. Nick Stavros started off the inning drawing a walk to become the first runner for BC. Brandan Hartman reached base safely after drawing a hit by pitch. Jonathan Sexton followed it up getting plunked to load the bases for Bridgewater. Tristan Gordon stood in the box for an RBI opportunity and delivered taking the third hit by pitch of the inning to plate the first run.
  • The Generals tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning when a wild pitch brought home the runner from third.
  • Hartman led off the top of third reaching safely on an error then moving up to second on the throw. Sexton came up to the plate and drove a ball deep to the right center gap trading places with Hartman. The Eagles struck for two more runs when Gordon hit a double of his own to go up 4-1.
  • The WLU offense added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back hit by pitches put runners on first and second, then a single by Nathan DeWitte loaded the bases for Washington and Lee. The third hit by pitch of the inning drove in the runner from third. James Swart got out of the jam by getting the next batter out on a line out to Jeffrey Snider.
  • Hartman dropped in a double down the left field line to start off the top of the fourth inning. Sexton continued his offensive tear when he hit an RBI single to left field to increase the lead to three, 5-2.
  • The Generals added three more runs in their half of the fourth inning. Cooper Charneco cleared the bases delivering a double to left center field. A single up the middle from Ethan Zulueta tied the game up again 5-5.
  • The top of the sixth was the turning point for BC starting off with Kyle Carlson hitting a ball deep to left field for a double. Snider broke the tie delivering a double down the right field line. He then moved up to third base and eventually scored on consecutive wild pitches. Hartman drew another walk, while Sexton dropped in another single to left to put runners on for Lucas Bauer. Bauer hit a single to left field to plate two more runs and put Bridgewater up 9-5.
  • Christian Harris led off another rally in the top of the seventh inning singling up the middle. Nick Dawson took a hit by pitch to move Christian Harris to second. Snider escaped a double play using his speed to record a fielder's choice. Stavros walked to load the bases, then Hartman drew his third walk of the game to bring in another run. Ashwin Suresh escaped the inning getting a pop up to the infield.
  • Washington and Lee added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Mason Satterfield laid down a bunt to plate the runner from third. Sexton threw down to third base to catch the runner trying to steal the base. Spencer Lloyd delivered a huge strike out freezing the batter at the plate.
  • WLU loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Nick Harris induced a fly out to right field to get out of the jam.
  • The Generals tacked on one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a double hit to center field. Nick Harris closed out the game getting the last batter on a ground out to secure the 10-7 win.

GAME STATS

  • The Eagles had five players record doubles in the matchup.
  • Sexton had a 3-for-5 performance at the plate driving in two RBIs also scoring two runs.
  • Bauer went 2-for-3 at the dish with two RBIs and two walks.
  • Gordon recorded three RBIs to lead BC in the category.
  • BC drew eight walks as a team with Hartman leading the way with three.
  • There was a combined 10 hit by pitches in the game.
  • Nick Griffin picked up the win going 1.0 inning giving up two hits while allowing anything. Nick Harris closed out the game going 2.0 innings giving up one run on three hits and striking out three.
  • Sims DeLong was issued the loss after 2.0 innings of work giving up four runs (three earned) on one hit, three walks and three hit by pitches.
