Alfred State held off Panthers to take the series sweep over Ferrum, 11-9. The Pioneers start the season 3-0. Zach Nelson picked up the win as he pitched 3.0 innings, scattering four runs over five hits. Daniel Lewis would get the save as he came in to close. He pitched 1.2 innings not allowing a hit or run with a strikeout. At the plate, Elijah Barinas went 3-5 with a double and two RBIs. Joshua Gardner went 1-2 for two RBIs. Posting six runs in the third inning, Guilford (2-0, 0-0 ODAC), led by the efforts of Rylan Smith and Ryne Rodrigues blitzed Southern Virginia (2-1, 0-0 USA South) 13-8 on Tuesday afternoon at Edgar H. McBane Field. Marcello Ricigliano got the ball for the Quakers to make his first start of the new season, but was only tasked with 1.0 inning and was perfect in it with a strikeout. He did not qualify for the victory that was ultimately awarded to Sam Melton by scorekeepers' decision to improve to 1-0. For the second-consecutive day, Smith was not retired by the opposition as he finished 5-for-5 with a pair of two-baggers, scoring twice and driving in four.
Junior third baseman Matthew Arnold had two hits and three RBIs, and senior left fielder Christian Chambers had a double and three RBIs, as well, to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 13-5 season-opening and non-conference road win at Greensboro College on Tuesday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin gained the pitching victory for the visiting Tigers (1-0), while junior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh earned a save against the host Pride (3-1). It was also the first collegiate coaching victory for first-year head coach Michael Mulvey in his first game leading the Garnet & Grey. H-SC scored 13 runs on 13 hits with one error.
Christopher Newport scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally against Bridgewater College (0-1) for a 6-4 win at Captains Park on Tuesday afternoon. In addition to the late-inning theatrics, the CNU pitching staff combined to strike out 15 batters as eight different arms appeared against the Eagles while being led by three scoreless frames from sophomore Ryan Morrison (1-0). Morrison struck out four of the 11 batters he faced in the middle innings before giving way to a trio of bullpen arms who slammed the door in victory for the Captains. Eli Novario, Colin D'Arcy, and Christian Williams retired the last six batters including a 1-2-3 ninth from Williams for his second save of the year. Morrison earned the win for his first of the year and second career victory. Jake Benedict finished the day 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles to lead the way.
Mitchell Grannan picked up his first save of the season as the Senior tamed the Roanoke comeback, securing the 11-7 victory for the Scots. Threatening a comeback in the top of the ninth, the Hawks were down 11-4 to begin the inning. Roanoke was able to plate two runs in the inning before Grannan entered the game. The senior pitcher from Chattanooga took over on the mound with the bases loaded and two outs. In the dramatics of the inning, Grannan threw a wild pitch that was struck on and missed but resulted in the batter taking first base and the runner from third scoring, closing the gap even more to 11-7. With the tying run at the plate, Grannan was able to strike out Roanoke's Corey Coogan to complete the save for Maryville.
Texas Lutheran opened the 2025 home slate at Katt-Isbel Field with a 5-4 win over the previously unbeaten Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders Tuesday night in Seguin. The Bulldogs (4-0, 3-0 SCAC) extended their season opening win streak to four games. Carson Hues made his collegiate debut, pitching four innings and allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out two batters and allowed two walks to pick up the win. Parker Schutte closed the game for his first save of the season in his Bulldog debut, coming in in the fifth and allowing one run on four hits and a walk over three innings of work. Texas Lutheran had seven hits, all singles, on the night but it would be freshman Caleb Small who would lead the Bulldogs offensively with two runs scored including stealing home. Small would finish 0-for-1, reaching base twice via hit by pitch.
Berry win a close game against the Brandeis Judges 11-10, thanks to a strong offensive performance and three straight shutout innings from the bullpen to close the game. The Vikings fell behind 2-0 early in the game but took the lead for the first time in the fourth inning, as the Vikings plated five runs to make the score 6-2. Brandeis retaliated, as they took a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning. The Vikings fired back in the bottom of the sixth, as they pushed across five runs to take an 11-10 lead that they would not relinquish. Berry's bullpen then proceeded to shut out the Judges. Cooper Chunn threw a scoreless seventh inning, benefiting from an inning-ending double play with runners' interference. The Vikings then turned to Aubrey Moraitakis, and he produced a two inning save, the first save of his collegiate career.
Grove City College opened the 2025 season Tuesday by splitting a non-conference doubleheader with host Averett. Grove City won the opener, 14-1, while the Cougars rebounded for a 5-2 win in the nightcap. Senior pitcher David Leslie earned the win in Game One by striking out eight in five shutout innings. Leslie walked one and allowed only three hits in his outing. Five Grove City players produced a pair of hits in the opener. Junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro doubled, singled and drove in three runs in his Grove City debut while senior right fielder Josh Minnich also went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs. The second game of the day started with freshman Ean Amerson on the mound for the Cougars. Amerson delivered a solid outing in just his second career appearance for Averett. The southpaw earned the win with five innings of two-run ball, recording two strikeouts along the way. It was a fabulous display of pitching for Averett's youngsters, as fellow freshman Corbin Mickle came in from the pen to relieve Amerson and continued to shut down Grove City's offensive efforts. Mickle threw four nearly perfect innings on his way to logging his first career save. Mickle allowed just one hit as he closed out the Cougars' fourth win of the season.
Chase Wade lifted one skyward to right and as the right fielder staggered, stumbled, and ultimately saw the ball to drop over his head, sending Rylan Smith on a mad dash to the plate, Guilford College (1-0, 0-0 ODAC) roared out of the dugout in celebration of a 13-12 walk-off winner over Brevard College (1-5, 0-0 USA South) in their season-opener at Edgar H. McBane Field on Monday afternoon. Guilford's breakthrough came in the eighth inning when they dew even at ten-all. With the international runner on second in extra-innings, Brevard grabbed the lead again in the top of the tenth. Walks drawn by Hayden Jennings and C.P. Pyle loaded the bases and a passed ball permitted the go-ahead run to score. Lucas Granata had a sacrifice fly to make it 12-10, but Wade limited the damage setting the stage for the home half. Skylar Dark was GC's runner at second for the tenth and he scored on a single to left. Another run scored all the way from first when Rylan Smith split the right-centerfield gap with a double setting the stage for Wade who sent the Quakers home happy with their first opening day win since 2020 by a final score of 13-12.
Blake Pou posted three hits and three runs, Ethan Williams collected three hits and four RBIs and Austin Graber tossed 2.2 innings of relief for the win in Sewanee's 6-4 victory over Brandeis University Monday afternoon here at Montgomery Field. The Tigers (4-0) scored twice in the first before the Judges tied the game with single runs in the fourth and sixth inning. Will Jennewein singled in the bottom of the sixth and Alden Wright followed with a single to right, with Jennewein scoring on an error. Sewanee added two more runs in the seventh after a leadoff walk from Jonah Patton and a single by Pou. Williams plated a run with a groundout and Tyler Pinson's nubber off the end of the bat started foul, then rolled fair right along the first base line for the base hit, scoring Pou on the play. In the eighth Pou walked, went to second on a wild pitch and came across on a Williams single to left, extending the lead to 6-2. Brandeis plated a pair of runs in the ninth with two singles and a walk before Joey Crews got the final three outs in relief of Graber. Crews induced a pair of groundouts and added a strikeout to end the contest for his first save.
Virginia Wesleyan University (1-0) won their first game of the season against the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan 8-4. The Marlins managed to tie the game at the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Marcell Whitfield walked, sending John Bastiaans home for VWU's first run of the day. On the next play, Ty James was hit by a pitch, which awarded the Marlins with a second run by Nick Valentin. North Carolina Wesleyan scored a single run at the bottom of the fifth to gain the lead at 3-2. In the top of the sixth inning, Nick Valentin scored a home run with three RBI, giving the Marlins a 5-3 lead. Both teams traded runs in the seventh. The eighth inning saw both teams getting two hits; but the Marlins were able to execute with two runs, and North Carolina Wesleyan failed to score.
