GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - Day 1 ended with the hometown favorite UW-La Crosse taking a 7-3 win over Salisbury. But other than that, it was a day for the South Region in the heart of the Midwest, as the other two South representatives each won their opening games.
Frostburg State and Ramapo started off the D-III World Series with neither team recording 1-2-3 innings. The first run of the game was scored by Ricky Castro on a Nick Walker single to give Frostburg a first ining 1-0 lead. Ramapo answered with a single run to tie the score at 1-1 through three innings of play. Frostburg tacked on two in the sixth on a Zach Keeler single as the Bobcats won 3-1 to advance in Pool A play.
Cortland brought their bats and and a strikeout duo in Seth Lamando and Turner Parry. The pair of pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and was backed by an offense that produces a 19-hit attack to defeat Webster 12-4 as round one in Pool A concluded. Cortland will face Frostburg State with Ramapo tangling with Webster in the first elimination contest of the day.
Pool B play began with Emory taking on Trinity (Texas). Each pitcher got through the order with perfect innings. Trinity drew first blood and looked like they were cruising to a win until Emory scored five in the sixth inning to grab its first lead of the day and continued to add to their run totals. In the ninth, Trinity came up with four runs to fall short, losing to Emory 9-7.
