De Pere, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team ran through the Midwest Conference Tournament with three straight wins, including a 6-2 victory over Grinnell College on Saturday, to win the Championship for the second time and earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Tourney crown, and trip to the NCAA's, is the second for the Bucs, with the first coming in 2009. The title puts Beloit into the Central Region Tournament, hosted by Webster University, in Sauget, Illinois, from May 18-22.
Saturday the Buccaneers struck first in the top of the opening inning when Kam Sallee singled in Mike Gulve. The Pioneers tied it up in the bottom of the second but Beloit again took the lead in the fourth when Jeremy Dutton singled in Sallee. But, again, GC tied it up with a run in the bottom of the inning.
The Bucs took the lead for good in the fifth with a pair of runs. Sallee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the first run before Ryan Kaveney hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-2. Beloit closed out the scoring in the seventh with two more runs when Adrian Peil singled in a run and Dutton hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Luke Brennan went seven innings for his fourth win, allowing four hits while striking out two and walking three. David Hlawek went an inning and a third and then Kaveney, pitching in his third straight game, earned the save with two-thirds of an inning in the ninth, getting a strikeout.
Sallee finished with three hits while Brice Call had two.
The Buccaneers will find out their Regional opponent when the NCAA announces the Tournament field late Sunday night or early Sunday morning.
