Who's armed for the World Series?

Brady Furdon of Wheaton (Mass.) and Austin Polezoes of North Central (Ill.) are just two of dozens of starters and even more relievers we'll likely see in Appleton. Who among these arms has the most wear and the most rest?

Not every team had the same path to get to the Division III World Series. Some arrive rested, some arrive worn out, but mostly, it's a mystery.

You know as well as we do that the fate of any would-be Division III national champion rests on its arms. While we aren't inside the training room for any of the teams, we can break down the numbers, lay them out for you and you can decide for yourself where each team's staff stands. So let's take a look at each team, how their pitchers have been used in the past four weeks, and how they've performed over that time.

Some teams have gotten markedly better over the course of the past month, while some have found the tougher competition of conference tournament and regional tournament more difficult. But while they've had varying levels of challenge over the past month, you can decide from looking at the numbers exactly how much that means.

One note in the stats below: The past four weeks span starts April 29, four weeks before the World Series opener. We've also listed only complete games of nine innings or longer, not seven-inning complete games, as all postseason games will go the full nine. (Or more.)

Cal Lutheran

Cal Lutheran logo It's key to note that we list eight pitchers here and these eight have thrown all but one of the innings for the Kingsmen this season. Weston Clark (the everyday first baseman) threw the other inning, starting and giving up five runs to Linfield on March 27. In that sense, it's typical of a program that can play home games on Feb. 10.

Concordia-Chicago

The Cougars pitching staff had a relatively easy time in the regional, although a back-of-the-rotation starter pitched on Monday and probably would not be used in the first-round game anyway. Closer Mike Formella got the most work of anyone in the regional and was stellar, earning the Midwest Regional's top player award. Only six of CUC's 44 games were fewer than nine innings. It's been a relatively easy past four weeks, at least compared to Mass-Boston and Washington & Jefferson.

Mass-Boston

One of the highest walk rates as a staff of those in the World Series, and with a lot of work over the past four weeks -- 16 games and 148-1/3 innings pitched. The Beacons are also a little unusual in that the pitcher with the most innings has one of the highest ERAs in the rotation. But aside from one extra inning, UMB got out of the regional with the minimum amount of work and nobody had to pitch on Monday.

North Central (Ill.)

If you're looking for a quick understanding as to why North Central went on its run to end the season, you can look no further. None of these numbers are typos -- indeed, the Cardinals posted a 1.55 ERA in the regional with two complete games in the four. North Central's May overall wasn't great, but it was a whole lot better than the 5.98 ERA the team posted in March and April. (North Central's season opener was played March 16.) And as you look at the key pitchers below, every one of them has brought the walk totals down.

Oswego State

With the cancellation of the SUNYAC tournament due to weather, the Lakers are well-rested headed into the Division III World Series. None of the key pitchers has thrown more than 14.2 innings over that stretch, and Tim Cronin only got there because he came out of the bullpen vs. Southern Maine to try to close out the regional. (Southern Maine touched him up and Oswego needed to come back with a second game.) Getting to the end of the World Series will require more stress than these pitchers have been under in a while, however.

Roanoke

Roanoke Like North Central, Roanoke has made a fantastic fun to get to the World Series. Unlike North Central, this was not accomplished primarily by the pitching staff. The Maroons have definitely gotten better on the mound, but not enough to go from 24-14 (and 9-11 in the ODAC) to Appleton. Nonetheless, Roanoke's pitchers have made the most of a pretty busy month, running through the losers' bracket in the ODAC and needing two championship games to win the South Regional. Note the difference between John Ruhlman's numbers and everyone else's: his 16 starts are more than any two other Roanoke pitchers combined.

Washington & Jefferson

The workload on some of W&J's pitchers is lessened somewhat by the 23 seven-inning games the Presidents have played this season, but W&J also is the only team left in the tournament that had to throw two games on Monday and Riley Groves, the staff ace and conference ERA leader, would be going on three days' rest if he pitched in the Series opener.

Wheaton (Mass.)

The past four weeks for Wheaton (Mass.) includes two losses to Babson in the NEWMAC tournament, a non-conference loss to Eastern Connecticut and a loss to Shenandoah in the first of two championship games in the Mid-Atlantic Regional, but Mike Bruemmel saved the Lyons from really screwing up their pitching by throwing the complete-game shutout on Monday. He was not likely to start the World Series opener regardless.
