Its been a long wait but today the D-III World Series returns

St. Thomas defeated Adrian in comeback fashion, 7-5 in game two of the 2021 D-III World Series being played in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

It has been a long wait between World Series games and that wait end today. Washington and Johns Hopkins opened the action with St. Thomas and Adrian to follow. Bracket two play starts in the late afternoon with Rowan taking on Wheaton (Mass.) and ends with Cortland-Salisbury.

Salisbury advanced to play Wheaton (Mass.) in a winner’s bracket game on Saturday evening in Cedar Rapids with an 11-1 win over Cortland. Cortland will face Rowan in an elimination game. Jackson Balzan, who entered the tournament with a 7-1 record, finished with a complete game nine-hitter, striking out nine and walking none. The only blemish was a James Varian home run in the fifth inning.

Wheaton grabbed the early lead with a two-run home run by Jacob Studley and a RBI single by Andrew Spirito in the opening game of bracket two. They added runs in the fourth, eight and ninth innings but the story of the game was the pitching of Griffin Young who was in command, carring a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Young pitched a complete game shutout as Wheaton moved into the winners game with a 6-0 win.

Adrian jumped on St. Thomas in the first inning for four runs but after trading runs in the third, it was all Tommies as St. Thomas defeats Adrian 7-5. Adrian put on a rally in the ninth but could not get the key hit.

WashU's Ryan Loutos and JHU's Pete Schaefer pitched around the danger, keeping the game scoreless through four. WashU broke through with two runs in the fifth to take the first lead of the game. JHU score twice in the seventh to tie the score and one in the eighth to answer a single run by Wash U in the bottom of the seventh. A six run inning by WashU broke the game open as the Bears defeat the Blue Jays 9-3.
