HIGH POINT, N.C. – No. 20/25 Shenandoah University claimed its fourth ODAC Baseball Championship in nine seasons of championship play Sunday with a 13-0 victory over Roanoke.
Shenandoah (34-10-1) earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with its second win in as many days over Roanoke (26-16).
IN DEPTH
The Hornets banged out 14 hits in scoring the 13 runs, but needed only a fraction of that production as junior Reilly Owen was outstanding on the mound.
The right-hander tossed a complete game eight-hitter and needed just 101 pitches to clinch the championship. Owen (5-4) walked two and struck out four in his first career shutout and first career complete game.
He retired the Maroons in order in just one inning, the eighth, but benefitted from inning ending double plays in the fourth and sixth and had four innings when he threw less than 10 pitches.
The SU offense provided Owen the cushion he needed with six runs on five hits in the second inning. Designated hitter Gavin Horning, one of eight SU players named to the All-Tournament team, had the big blow in the frame with a three-run home run to left.
The three-run dinger was one of two that the Hornets hit on the day. Second baseman Kyle Lisa, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, hit a three-run home run as part of a four-run fourth.
The Hornets closed out the game with one run in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
Horning and Frankie Ritter both had three hits with Lisa, Ryan Clawson, and Matt Moon getting two each. Horning drove in four runs, Lisa three, and Moon two.
Brandon Hill, the first of seven Roanoke pitchers, took the loss. Hill (1-3) allowed three runs on two hits and one hit batter in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
