CLARKSVILLE, Ark.. (Jan. 30) -- Hendrix College stranded eight base runners and gave up a late tie in its 4-2 season-opening loss against University of the Ozarks on Sunday afternoon at Lonnie R. Qualls Field.

First year righty Thomas Weber tossed four hitless innings, struck out six batters and allowed just four runners to reach base in his first career start. He forced four grounders and one fly out against 15 batters. Weber also went 2-for-2 at the plate and took one walk.

Hendrix allowed 10 free passes (eight BB, two HBP), while Ozarks gave up just two free passes (two BB). "Thomas was solid both ways, he pitched great and swung the bat well too," said head coach RJ Thomas. "Unfortunately, we allowed too many walks and couldn't get clutch hits with runners on base."

Ozarks first year righty Sam Bronwood pitched five shutout innings to set the pace. The Eagles finally lit up the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a pair of unearned runs after first year righty Justin Mosbey took over the hill for Hendrix. First year Brandon Brewer was pushed across on a walk and first year Kurt Shemanske crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Hendrix scored its first run in the sixth when junior Mark Vlaskamp singled through the right side and raced all the way home on a single to left field by junior Andrew Thames and throwing error by the left fielder.

The Warriors evened the score in their next at bat. First year Collin Radack led off the inning with a walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on junior Kyle Raskin's base knock to center field. Hendrix stranded the go-ahead runner at third with a grounder to second.

The Eagles answered with a pair of game-winning runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Warriors' senior Jeff Forgerson inherited a pair of runners after Mosbey allowed two singles with one out. Forgerson walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and junior Michael Prusator made it hurt with a two-run double to center field.

Ozarks retired the side with a fly out, a grounder, and a strike out swinging in the eighth. The Warriors threatened in their last at bat with runners on first and second with two outs, however, junior Nathan Harr struck out swinging to close the book.

Hendrix will entertain University of Dallas in its home-opening three game set this weekend. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Feb. 5 at 12 p.m. CT and then finish the series on Feb. 6 at 1 p.m.
