GREENSBORO, N.C. - Visiting Piedmont College took advantage of Guilford College's shaky pitching and fielding in a 19-0 season-opening baseball win Sunday. The Lions (1-0) got seven shutout innings from Kevin Caldwell and five strikeouts in two scoreless frames from reliever Ed Cook.

Six Guilford pitchers combined to issue 11 walks and the Quakers committed seven errors, which helped prolong Piedmont's 21-hit attack. Dave Bartek had four hits and three stolen bases out of the number-nine hole and his brother, Dale, added three hits and three RBI from the number-eight spot. Kyle Davis also had three hits and scored three times. Catcher Garrett Lovelace contributed three runs batted in for Piedmont.

Caldwell kept Guilford hitters off balance for most of the game and yielded four hits and no walks. Cook took over in the eighth inning and fanned five of the seven batters he faced, yielding only a pinch-double to Zach Montalbano, Guilford's lone extra-base hit of the game.

The teams conclude the season series Monday at 2:15 at Guilford's McBane Field.
