The University of Redlands baseball program split a doubleheader against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, finishing out the season's first three-game series of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition. The Bulldogs dropped the first game by a score of 4-6 but followed up the defeat with a 10-5 victory in the night cap against the Stags.

Although sophomore starting pitcher Kyle Hart (Burbank, CA) rang up a career-high nine batters in 7.2 innings of work in the first game, his team struggled to effectively string hits together while leaving nine on base.

In addition, Redlands' defensive flaws hurt the club as the Bulldogs committed a surprising five errors.   CMS gained two unearned runs but benefitted from a total of five scores during the innings that included at least one Maroon and Gray miscue.

Senior left fielder Brandon Owashi (San Diego, CA) highlighted the Redlands offense, collecting two hits while scoring and driving in a run. The speedy outfielder also notched his inaugural steal of the 2011 season.

Behind sophomore starter Paul Dippel's (East Granby, CT) solid performance, the Bulldogs bounced back in the second game, recording the second-most runs so far this season with a 10-5 victory.  Dippel registered his first career Bulldog win, tossing five innings while allowing only two runs on six hits and no walks.

Following Dippel, junior lefty Adam Byrd (Bullhead City, AZ) made his first appearance of the year, giving up just one run in 2.2 innings of work.

Redlands' back end of the lineup stepped up as the No. 6 through 9 hitters each notched a multi-hit game and went a combined 9-for-18 while scoring five runs.  Overall, six Bulldogs collected a multi-hit game.

Junior third baseman Jason Henning (Redlands, CA) and junior shortstop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) each crossed the plate on three occasions. Tucker posted impressive power numbers by tallying two triples on a 4-for-4 showing at the plate.

Freshman centerfielder Alex Scheiwe (Encinitas, CA) made his first collegiate start and logged his first hit, run, and RBI for the Bulldogs.

Redlands (3-2, 2-1 SCIAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it faces international opponent University of British Columbia (CAN) in a 2 p.m. exhibition game at the Yard.
