Third Time is the Charm for CLU - (Game Two Recap)

More news about: Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Having been postponed on two occasions due to inclement weather throughout the weekend, Cal Lutheran and Occidental were finally able to complete their scheduled doubleheader Monday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.

Box Score (Game Two): CLU 10, OXY 1 - F

Picking up where they left off on Friday before that one-off game was halted due to rain, the Kingsmen scored early and often during both games of their doubleheader against Occidental, winning both by scores of 6-1 and 10-1.

Game Two: CLU 10, OXY 1 - F                                                                                          Unlike game one when it took six innings for Cal Lutheran to create a lead that was large enough to ensure victory, it only took one inning in game two for Cal Lutheran to light up the scoreboard and quickly put the Tigers on their heels.

Providing a glimpse of the damage the Kingsmen bats would cause throughout game two, the first five CLU batters of the game all reached base safely on a triple, single, and back-to-back-to-back doubles.

The Kingsmen efficiency was on full display in the second and third innings as well when they were able to increase their lead by another three and two runs respectively to virtually secure the a sweep of the day's action before Occidental even had a chance to organize their efforts at the plate.

Capping off the CLU scoring spree was John Leal as his triple was the catalyst for the final two Cal Lutheran runs scored on the day. Driving in Kale Kauppi with that swing, Leal soon crossed the plate himself Trevor Koons singled to left field on the very next at-bat.

Watching the scoring cushion grow incrementally by the inning, Kingsman starter John LaMoure cruised through his five innings on the bump as he held the Tigers scoreless and only allowed five hits.

Even more impressive about Lamoure's effort was that he nearly finished with a 2:1 strikeout to hit ratio as the junior southpaw fanned nine to add to his totals for the season. With 31 K's now to his collection in 2011 he not only leads but has more strikeouts than the totals of the next two pitchers combined in that category.

With the wins, Cal Lutheran has now defeated Occidental in 17 of the last 22 games played between the two.

After battling both the rain and Occidental throughout the extended weekend, Cal Lutheran will now have four days to prepare for their next game against Redlands. First pitch for that game will take place at 2:00 p.m. this Friday at Ullman Stadium.
