Frostburg State Splits CAC Doubleheader with St. Mary's (Md.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team outhit its Capital Athletic Conference opponent, St. Mary's (Md.) 18-9 as it split its first league doubleheader of the season dropping the first game 3-1 but rebounding for a 4-1 win in the second.

Each offense was held in check in the first three innings of the first game until the Seahawks (5-3, 1-1) broke open the scoreless game with a three-run fourth inning. St. Mary's used three hits and a passed ball to plate its only runs of the game and take a 3-0 lead.

The Bobcats (4-2, 1-1) got one run back in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-1. Junior Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) singled to right to lead off the inning and came around to score when freshman Tyler Hawthorne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) doubled to left center. Frostburg State was held to just that one run to end the game 3-1.

Senior Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) suffered the loss for FSU only going 4.0 innings, striking out five and scattering just four hits on the afternoon. All three Seahawks runs were charged to Ross. Devon Jerrard picked up the win for St. Mary's pitching 6.0 innings with six strikeouts and giving up 10 hits and one earned run.

The Bobcats came back in the second game and took the contest 4-1.

The Seahawks struck first scoring in the bottom of the first when Matt Baden stole home with two outs. Senior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) got Urso swinging on a 2-2 count to end the inning and any scoring threat from the Seahawks.

Frostburg State took a lead 2-1 in the top of the third on three hits. Junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) doubled to center and advanced to third on a single from classmate Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Senior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett) singled to right to bring home Heatwole after junior John Barrett (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison (Hagerstown)) walked to load the bases. Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) hit a sac fly  to right field to score Greene.

FSU tacked on the final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh for a 4-1 advantage over St. Mary's. Juniors Garrett Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Emory & Henry)) and Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the seventh. Heatwole bunted to put runners in scoring position and Greene was intentionally walked to load the bases. Carr singled through the left side to bring home Price and Boyd and score the final runs of the game.

Quayle threw a complete game for the Bobcats giving up just one run in the first inning and striking out five. The right hander did not give up a walk and held the Seahawks to just five hits. Carlos Cruz took the loss for St. Mary's going 6.1 innings surrendering four runs, all earned, on seven hits and three walks. Cruz struck out four.

Frostburg State returns to action tomorrow afternoon when to finish a three-game road stint with St. Mary's with the first pitch schedule for 12:00 p.m.
