FERRUM, Va. – No. 6/7 Shenandoah University earned a milestone baseball victory Saturday afternoon in a 9-5 USA South Conference win at Ferrum College in the league opener for both schools.

The win for the Hornets (6-0, 1-0 USA South) is the 200th of head coach Kevin Anderson's Shenandoah career.

Anderson, who cracked the 100 win barrier with an 8-3 victory over Waynesburg on February 21, 2008, needed just 139 games to win his second 100 contests as SU skipper.

Senior All-America Greg Van Sickler (3-0) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits in 6.0 innings to pick up the win over the Panthers (5-4, 0-1).

Van Sickler struck out five before turning it over to juniors Brian Goddard and Kyle Scallion for the final nine outs.

Goddard, who worked the seventh and eighth, allowed just one hit and struck out two.

Scallion sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a groundout in the Ferrum ninth to ice the victory.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the seventh, Shenandoah scored three runs on two hits to take the lead for good.

Sophomore Keaton Neeb had the big blow in the inning, lacing a bases loaded double to center to score both Van Sickler and Mike Smith, who had reached via single and a base on balls, respectively.

Now with a three-run advantage, Goddard allowed only a leadoff walk in the seventh and a one-out single in the eighth to set the table for Scallion.

Van Sickler, Joey Donofrio and Smith all had two hits for the victorious Hornets.

Freshman Nick Beall added a solo HR in the fourth.

Paul Jaglowski was 3 for 4 for the Panthers.

The two teams complete their weekend series tomorrow with a 2 p.m. contest. Sophomore Vince Claudio is the scheduled starting pitcher for SU.
