Spartans Get Swept at Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD  - The York College Spartan baseball squad dropped a Sunday doubleheader at Salisbury University in Capital Athletic Conference action in Salisbury. The Spartans fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the CAC while the Gulls improve to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Salisbury won game one 2-1 in a tightly contested pitcher's duel while the Gulls completed the sweep with a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Salisbury got all the runs they needed off Spartan starter Andy Rosenzweig in the fourth inning. Devon Quaglietta led off the inning with double to right field. He came around to score when Brian Green laid down a bunt and the Spartans committed an error that also allowed Green to move to second. Green was then sacrificed over to third and scored on a sacrifice fly to center.

The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth but were unable to plate a run as Sea Gull starter Kyle Judson got out of the jam.

York finally got on the board in the seventh as Joe Doyle led off the frame with a double to left. He scored when Rob Klinck doubled to right as the Spartans had a rally cooking. Freshman Andrew Hershey singled to left putting Spartans on the corners with one out. Drew Baldwin relieved Judson and got a ground out and a fly out to end the game and earn the save.

Judson tossed 6.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk as he improves to 1-2. Baldwin recorded the final two outs of the game to notch his first save of the season.

Rosenzweig suffered the hard-luck loss despite pitching well for the Spartans. He allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work. He struck out four as his record is leveled at 1-1.

Quaglietta led the Salisbury offense with two hits and a run scored while Green was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Doyle and Klinck paced the six-hit Spartan offense as they each recorded a double in the loss.

The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first in game two, reaching Spartan starter Tommy Moran for three runs on two hits with two walks. Salisbury pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single.

York trimmed the Salisbury lead to 4-1 in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Steve Tretter and Justin Cohen. The Sea Gulls tacked on three insurance runs on four hits in the sixth as the Spartan losing streak reached six.

Dustin Herbert earned the win for the Gulls as he allowed on run on eight hits in 6.1 innings of work. He struck out four and did not walk a batter as he improves to 1-0. Baldwin again closed out the game with a perfect .2 innings of work.

Moran suffered the loss as he allowed the three runs on two hits with his two walks and a strikeout. He falls to 0-1 with the setback.

Brad Baylis led the Salisbury offense with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Green added two hits, a run scored and an RBI while Bill Morton added a hit and two RBI. Fred Kreiger and Bill Root each contributed two hits to the 12-hit Salisbury attack.

Tretter led the Spartans with two hits including his first double of the year while Cohen registered his third two-bagger of 2011.

The Spartans are schedule to return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Johns Hopkins University. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm in Baltimore, Md.
