BRIDGEWATER, Va. -  No. 4/6 Shenandoah University ran its season-opening baseball winning streak to nine games Wednesday afternoon with an 11-4 non-league victory over future ODAC foe Bridgewater College.

The Hornets (9-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings and led 8-3 after six before closing out the Eagles (5-5) with two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Senior Clint DeHaven got things started for SU with a three-run HR in the second; DeHaven had his best day in a Hornet uniform with three hits in five at-bats including a double and the three-run dinger.

Senior All-America Greg Van Sickler also went deep for Shenandoah when he connected for a solo shot in the fourth.

DeHaven's and Van Sickler's home runs were two of 15 hits on the afternoon for the Hornets. Kevin Brashears, like Van Sickler a pre-season All-America, led the offense with four hits in five at-bats while sophomore Kurt Krout was 3 for 3 with a run batted in.

Senior Brian Goddard (2-0) was the winning pitcher after allowing three runs on 10 hits and two walks in 8.0 innings. He struck out five before turning it over to classmate Brian Fream to start the ninth.

After Fream hit his only batter faced, junior Kyle Scallion induced three groundouts following a base on balls to end the contest.

Shenandoah returns to the diamond on Friday for the opening game of its USA South Conference game against N.C. Wesleyan. Van Sickler (3-0) is the Hornets scheduled starter for the 4:00 contest.
