No. 5 UW-Whitewater Opens 2011 Season with 11-1 Win at Washington University

St. Louis, Mo., March 3, 2011 – No. 5 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scored two runs in the first and four in the second en route to an 11-1 win over the Washington University baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Kelly Field in St. Louis, Mo.

UW-Whitewater, the 2005 NCAA Division III National Champion, had 11 hits in its 2011 season-opening win. The Bears, which fell to 2-3 overall, had seven hits and made two errors in the loss.

A two-out two RBI single by Andrew Eichstaedt in the first of WUSTL starter David Liebman made it 2-0. The lead grew to 6-0 after two innings, following a two-out three-run home run by Rob Coe. An RBI double by Matt Beyer and an RBI single by Coe in the top of the third pushed the advantage to 8-0.

WUSTL got its lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Kyle Billig led off the inning with a double, and then moved to third on a ground out by senior Miguel Davis. With two outs, senior Travis May singled to right field to end the shutout. Davis finished the day 2-for-3.

Liebman (0-1) took the loss for Washington U., allowing seven hits and eight earned run in four innings pitched. The Bears bullpen allowed just four hits and one earned run in five innings pitched.

Riley Tincher, a second-team All-America selection in 2010, picked up the win on the mound for the Warhawks. He went five innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run. Daniel Putnam was 3-for-4 with three runs scored for UW-Whitewater, while Coe was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Washington University takes on UW-Whitewater in the second game of the doubleheader on Friday, March 4, at 2 p.m.
