DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) saw his 41-game hitting streak end from the on deck circle in game one, but teammate Ryan Doran (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) came within two outs of no-hitter in the nightcap as the Wolverines split a CAC twinbill with York (Pa.).
The Spartans won the opener 2-0, while Wesley rebounded in game two for a 13-1 win.
Murphy flied out in the first, hit into a double play in the third and grounded out to shortstop in the fifth to end his historic run. The Wolverines' all-time hits leader had recorded a game in every game since last March 16, just short of a calendar year.
The opener was a pitcher's duel as the duo of Andy Rosenzweig and Brandon Ullom combined on a shutout for the Spartans (2-8, 1-3 CAC). DJ Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston), held the Spartans to just three hits and a walk, while striking out seven in a complete game loss, was equally impressive for Wesley (10-2, 1-1 CAC).
Keckler allowed just an unearned run in the third before a Rob Klinck home run in the top of the seventh gave York some breathing room.
The Wolverines actually out hit the Spartans six to three, including two by Jon Carlson (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg), but were unable to push any runs across.
Rosenzweig tossed six innings for the win, with Ullom picking up the save with a scoreless seventh.
In the nightcap, the story was Doran, who held the Spartans without a hit into the seventh and picked up a complete game win, his fourth victory of the season.
Wesley's offense came alive in the game, tagging York starter Joey Couch for five runs in 1.1 innings. All five came in the second innings as Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and Murphy ripped run scoring hits and the Wolverines were aided by a pair of errors in the outfield by the Spartans.
Murphy and Casey Rothwell (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham) added sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth innings as the Wolverines stretched the lead to 7-0. Wesley then exploded for six runs in the sixth to break the game wide open. Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) stroked a two-run single and Rothwell, Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Benedict also added RBIs in the inning.
Doran, meanwhile, was on cruise control for much of the game. Klinck reached on an error in the second inning, but the senior retired the next 14 batters in order before a pinch single by Colbie Herr with one out in the seventh broke up the no-hitter.
York managed to get on the scoreboard on the final play of the game. Pete Greenland singled and Herr scored before Daniel Dennison was gunned down trying to go from first to third.
Doran finished the game with a complete game three-hitter, striking out five without issuing a walk.
Benedict had three hits in the contest, while Murphy added a pair. The Wolverines took advantage of 10 walks issued by parade of five York pitchers. Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) walked three times in the game, while Seth Hastings (Seaford, Del./Sussex Tech) walked once and was hit by a pitch in two different plate appearances.
The Wolverines head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for spring break and open the trip against Penn State-Harrisburg on March 7.
