Yaphank, N.Y. – The University of Southern Maine ripped 13 doubles and clubbed six home runs as it slugged its way past Mount Saint Vincent by a score of 29-4. The Dolphins scored all four of their runs in the third inning, with senior John McManus (Bayside, N.Y.) driving in a pair with a two out single.
Mount Saint Vincent allowed single game records for hits, runs, doubles and home runs in the contest. The Huskies finished the day with 13 doubles, six round trippers and scored their 29 runs on the strength of 31 base hits.
After Southern Maine jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, the Dolphins battled their way back to tie the score at 4-4 in their half of the third. Vinny Todino (Eastchester, N.Y.) drove in the Mount's first run on a double to left center field and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.).
Trailing 4-2 later in the frame, McManus knotted the score at four after a two out, two run single up the middle. The safety drove home Tyler Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) who reached on an error and James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.) who ripped his third double of the season.
The Huskies would quickly grab the lead back in the home half of the inning when Nick Grady homered to left center field to give them a 5-4 lead. Following the home run, Southern Maine scored the final 24 runs of the game, including nine each in the fourth and fifth innings.
Southern Maine had 13 different players record a hit and had 11 players with at least two. Forrest Chadwick went 5-for-7 in the game with two doubles and a home run. He scored four runs and drove in five. Lucas Marks ripped three doubles on the day and drove in four runs. Mike Eaton also drove in four runs for the Huskies and scored three times.
Five different players each recorded one hit for the Dolphins, with Todino and Labartino collecting the only extra base hits. McManus ended the day with his hit and his second and third RBI of the season.
Mike Trainor (Patterson, N.Y.) fell to 0-2 on the season after working 3.1 innings and allowing eight runs on nine hits. Southern Maine used seven pitchers in the game with Greg Holmes earning the win in relief. He worked 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.
The loss is Mount Saint Vincent's third straight and drops it to 1-4 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to snap their skid on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to the College of Staten Island. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
