Walkoff Win for Wesley

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - An infield single by Steve Perone (Skillman, N.J./Montogomery) in the ninth brought home Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) for the winning run as Wesley downed Catholic 2-1.

The Wolverines (12-2) trailed 1-0 heading into the ninth, but scored two runs to win the game.

Zach Stuart (Palmyra, Pa/Palmyra Area) picked up the win with one inning of relief work.

Starter Jordan Lozzi (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) had dazzled through eight innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out 10, but the Wesley offense had been unable to score.

That was because the Cardinals' (5-3) trio of Nick Rogowski, Rob Steinkopf and Marc Hanna had blanked the Wolverines on just four hits and a walk.

But in the ninth Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) led off the inning with a double.  John Carlson (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) bunted him to third and Murphy singled him home to tie the game.  After Murphy stole second, Catholic intentionally walked Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) to set up the double play.  The Wolverines then executed a double steal and the Cardinals issued a free pass to Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) to load the bases and keep the potential inning ending double play as an option.

Perone followed with a ball that didn't make it out of the infield, but brought home Murphy with the winning run.

Hanna took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.

Murphy led the Wolverines with three hits and stole a pair of bases.  Perone had a pair of hits in the contest.

The Cardinals scored their only run in the sixth when Matt Grieb singled, stole second and scored on a single by Tim Mierzwa.

The Wolverines finish play in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, March 9 with a game against Eastern.
