Top-Ranked Heidelberg Posts Third Straight Win to Open Year

Port Charlotte, Fla. – March 8, 2011 – The no. 1 ranked Heidelberg University baseball team continued its winning ways today, March 8, with a 6-2 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The win improved the Berg to 3-0 on the year, while the Battling Bishops fall to 3-4.

Picking up where he left off a season ago was senior right-hander Nathan James (Rockport, Ind. / South Spencer). In his first start on the year James opened with a strike out in the first inning en route to five on the day. Through seven innings of work James allowed just six hits and one earned run. Backing James was a flawless defense for the third consecutive game.

In the first inning of action Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) got in scoring position to set the stage for a Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) RBI double down the left field line to give the Berg an early 1-0 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the third, but Heidelberg's Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) answered in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to right field. Heidelberg doubled its run total in the sixth. With two outs Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) knocked in Elvin Williams Jr. (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) before Monroe added his second RBI single of the game.

The game remained in favor of Heidelberg 4-1 until the final inning of action. Monroe, Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvain Northview) and Zach Colatruglio (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) stepped up to the plate and loaded the bases on three straight hit-by-pitches to set the stage for Jordan Martin (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy) to draw a bases loaded walk. Williams sent another run across with a single up the middle.

OWU closed out the scoring in the bottom half of the ninth with a RBI ground out by Craig Phillips.

Heidelberg finished the game with nine hits. Leading the way was Williams with three hits, a RBI and a run scored. Monroe finished with two hits and a team-leading two RBI. Also picking up hits was Lizcano, Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland), Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) and Lash.
