Thomas More Sweeps Doubleheader With Bridgewater (Va.) in Florida

(AUBURNDALE, Fla.) - The Thomas More College baseball team swept Bridgewater (Va.) College today (Wednesday, March 9, 2011) in a nonconference doubleheader during the third day of the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida.  The Saints won game one, 7-6 in nine innings and the nightcap 4-3 in nine innings.

With the sweep the Saints improve to 4-0 on the season.  With the two losses, the Eagles fall to 7-9 on the season.

In game one the Eagles led 6-4 after six innings as they scored two in the first, one in the fifth and three in the sixth, while the Saints scored two in the first and one in the fifth and sixth.  Thomas More then scored two in the seventh to force extra innings and then plated the winning run in the ninth.

On the mound, junior Aaron Carmack (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) started and earned a no-decision as he went six inning giving up six runs (three earned) on nine hits, while striking out three.  Freshman Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) earned his first collegiate win as he pitched three scoreless innings of relief and gave up only one hit, while striking out one. 

Four Saints had multiple hits in game one, as senior outfielder Max Robbins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with two runs scored, sophomore outfielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was two-for-five with two runs batted-in, freshman infielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-five with two RBI and junior catcher Andrew Clements (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-five.

In game two, the Saints scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the sixth, and one in the ninth, while Bridgewater scored two in the fourth, and one in the fifth.

Leading Thomas More at the plate were Robbins, who went three-for-five with two RBI, sophomore designated hitter Grant Lewis (Mason, Ohio/Mason), who went three-for-three and senior catcher Nick Ryan (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry), who went two-for-four.

Junior pitcher Paul Uhl (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) earned a no-decision as he pitched four plus innings and gave up three runs and struck out three.  Sophomore David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) pitched five innings of relief to earn the win.

The Saints return to action tomorrow when they play Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in a single nine-inning game at 10 a.m. at Polk State College in Winter Haven, Florida.
