THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Scoring three first inning runs was enough run support to hang on for a 3-2 win over Wabash on Wednesday afternoon at "Sparky" Anderson Field. The result was the fourth straight one-run victory and fifth overall for the Kingsmen.
Box Score: CLU 3, WAB 2 - F
Three straight extra base hits by Darren Iacono, Nick Boggan and K.C. Judge contributed the first two runs of the game. Brandyn Delgado's two-out RBI-triple provided the third and final Cal Lutheran score of the ballgame.
A pair of freshmen played pitch and catch for the Kingsmen with hurler Aaron Roth and catcher Kevin Eto each earning their first collegiate start. Facing a bases loaded one-out jam in the second inning, a near passed ball turned into a fortuitous second out following a play at home plate.
Roth went on to strike out Brian Lares for the final out and keep the clean sheet. He went three shutout innings striking out four and allowing two hits in the process.
It would be a sign of things to come as the Kingsmen pitching staff stranded 10 Little Giants base runners to avoid the big inning and maintaining its early advantage.
CLU used five different pitchers including Spencer Trygg. Entering the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh inning he forced Tanner Coggins to line out to strand the game-tying and go-ahead runs.
While Minnich earned his third save of the season by tossing a clean ninth, he attributes the performance of Trygg and the rest of the staff for putting the team in a position for victory.
Cal Lutheran (9-6) will return to conference play on the road this Friday, Mar. 11 at 2:30 p.m. against Whittier. The Kingsmen will host a Saturday doubleheader with the Poets scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
