Orange, Calif. (3/13/11) – The #2 Cougars used their biggest offensive burst of the season as they pounded out 20 runs on 18 hits to defeat #30 Ithaca College, 20-4, Sunday night in neutral non-conference action.
The Bombers (3-1) entered the contest averaging over 14 runs per contest, but Kean (10-1) held tonight's run total to just four, spaced out in single frames.
Kean used back-to-back eight run innings to start the game to give themselves a large cushion. Junior Vinny Galya recorded two hits in the bottom of the first with an RBI in his second at-bat. Other highlights in the inning include a two RBI single by senior Nick Nolan, a two RBI single by junior Eddie Jennings and a two RBI single by senior Chris Carrano. In total, Kean sent 11 batters to the plate in the first and recorded seven hits.
Highlighting the second inning, sophomore Stephen Nappe launched his first homerun of the year, a two run shot while junior Lee Cavico added a two RBI single and senior Kyle Walker registered a two RBI double.
In all, 18 Cougars saw action in tonight's game.
Junior Mike Russo earned the win. Russo (2-0) tossed six innings allowing six hits and two runs, one earned. He walked four and struck out eight. Junior Brian Eggleston suffered the loss for Ithaca. Eggleston (1-1) allowed 12 runs, 11 earned, in one and two thirds innings of work.
On the evening, Walker was 3-for-4 with three doubles and two walks. His three doubles in a game ties a single-game record held by many. Cavico was 2-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI while Jennings was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
For the Bombers, Trevor Wolf was 3-for-5 with a triple.
Kean enjoys a day off and returns to action on Tuesday when they face La Verne College at 2:30 p.m. local time.
