FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Westminster College baseball team remains unbeaten to start the season as the Titans swept a doubleheader against Mount St. Vincent Wednesday in Fort Pierce, Fla. The Titans won the first game, 3-2, before taking the second game, 11-2. Westminster is now 6-0 with four games remaining in Florida while the Dolphins fall to 3-8.
Six different Titans posted multiple-hit games including three in each game to account for a combined 22 Westminster hits.
After trailing 1-0 in the first inning of game one, the Titans took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning and added another run in the seventh inning. Westminster's two-run fourth inning saw sophomore Tyler Robinson doubling and scoring on an error, and junior Tim Wiand singling and later scoring on a hit by sophomore Ty Miller. Wiand also added an RBI single in the seventh inning.
Junior Steve Perrotta doubled twice and finished 2-for-4, while Wiand and Miller went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively, to lead the Titans' 10-hit offense in game one.
Sophomore Kyle Allen earned the win by pitching the first 5 2/3 innings with one run on six hits and five walks to go with three strikeouts.
Allen was one of three Titans with two hits in the second game. Junior Bud Main and senior Rick DeBlasio also collected two hits apiece.
Main tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Chris Ross to give Westminster a 2-1 lead in the third inning. The Titans then scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-1 lead.
Notable hits in the fourth inning were Allen's two-run single and junior Ethan Yeager with a two-run double.
Freshman Ron Sullivan pitched a complete-game win for the Titans in game two. The 6-foot-5 right-hander walked one and struck out five while giving up two runs (1 earned) on three hits.
Westminster plays Franciscan Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
