CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College baseball team lost their fourth game in five tries with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the University of Texas at Dallas on Friday night at Frierson Field.
Derek Dallas scattered 11 hits and struck out six over eight innings to pick up the victory for the Comets. Max Willard struck out two in the ninth to collect the save for UTD.
Stephen Byrd took his first loss of the season, allowing three earned runs over 4.0 innings. Ian Underwood was impressive in relief, striking out four over the final 5.0 innings.
After UT-Dallas scored an unearned run in the first inning, the Choctaws answered with two runs in the second on an RBI single from Mike Kerdock and a sacrifice fly from Andy Smith.
The Comets struck back with three runs in the fourth inning to grab the lead, 4-2. Matt Olszewski and Jacob Starnes each singled home a run in the frame. Olszewski finished the game 4-4 with two RBI.
In the fifth inning, Spencer Brunson doubled to left-center field to score Stuart Magee all the way from first to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Choctaws loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but two fly-outs ended the frame with no more damage.
The Comets added runs in the eighth and ninth innings to finish with the three-run win.
The Choctaws outhit UTD, 13-12, and had five players finish with two hits apiece.
The same two teams will meet on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
