Warriors split twin bill against Majors

CONWAY, Ark. (March 19) -- Hendrix College junior righty Teddy Smoyer fired a complete game with eight strikeouts to lead the Warriors to a 6-2 win over No. 24 Millsaps College in the opener, while the Majors rallied for four runs in the come-from-behind 5-4 win in the night cap on Saturday at Warrior Field.

Smoyer allowed just four hits and two walks in his first victory of the season. Hendrix (9-10, 6-7 SCAC) rallied for five runs on four hits and a two-out error in the first inning of the opener. A pair of RBI grounders sent junior Clark Sims and first year Nick Richardson across. Junior Andrew Thames hammered an RBI double to score junior Kyle Raskin and junior Aaron Bowen tagged a base knock through the left side to score Thames.

Millsaps (15-7, 8-3 SCAC) scored its first runs of the game in the third inning on a standup triple from senior Jeremy Aliff and an RBI grounder up the middle from senior Josh Ordeneaux.

Hendrix manufactured an insurance run in the fifth to reach the final mark when junior Nathan Harr singled to score Forgerson, who reached with a leadoff double to right field.

The Warriors got clutch pitching from the first year right-hander Will Harris in the second game. Harris scattered seven hits and struck out six batters over 7.0 innings of work. He tossed six shutout innings and exited the game after the seventh with a 2-1 advantage.

Hendrix senior left-hander Jordan Suydam walked the leadoff batter in the eighth and first year right-hander Justin Mosbey entered to work his way out of a jam and hold the Majors scoreless. Mosbey would be pinned with the loss as he exited the game with the go-ahead runner on first base in the ninth.

Millsaps rallied for four runs on two hits and an error in the ninth. Senior right-hander Gabe Levin was called upon the get Hendrix out of the jam, however, a balk with two outs and the bases loaded sent the tying run across and then an error at first base gave Millsaps the go-ahead score.

The Warriors made a valiant effort to get back in the game in their last at bat when Sims and Richardson reached on back-to-back singles with one out. Forgerson walked to load the bases and first year Jacob Perschke collected his fourth hit of the game for two runs. Millsaps junior shortstop Drew Leonard made a play in the hole to get Perschke out at second base and keep Hendrix from plating the tying run, ending the game 5-4.

Millsaps earns the season-series win with a 3-1 record against Hendrix in 2011. The two teams will wrap up the set with a nine-inning contest at 12 p.m. CDT on Sunday at Warrior Field.
