AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Roman Mondalto pitched a complete-game five-hitter to lead Westfield State University to a 4-2 victory to earn a doubleheader split with Roger Williams University on Friday, March 18.
In the opener, Roger Williams rallied for a 9-8 eight-inning victory. Westfield is 5-5 heading into its final two Florida games on Saturday afternoon vs. Trinity College. Roger Williams is 4-6.
Mondalto, a junior transfer from Northern Essex Community College, struck out seven and walked two in his complete-game mound stint. Mixing his pitches well, he also had 12 groundouts.
Westfield took a 2-0 first-inning lead on a two-run single by Andrew Medeiros. Roger Williams scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but the Owls responded with two runs in the home half of the frame, scoring on a balk and Alex Cloutier's RBI double.
The Owls collected eight hits with no multiple-hit efforts in the balanced attack.
In the opener, Westfield trailed 7-2 after five innings when it rallied for six runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. Westfield stranded 12 baserunners in the extra-inning game but it rallied to take the lead with two outs and the bases empty. The Owls scored their first three runs in the frame on a balk and RBI singles by Pete Grillo and Josh Blair. Pete Hogan then hit a fly ball down the line that was dropped by the rightfielder, clearing the sacks for three unearned runs.
Westfield reliever Curt Everett entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and retired the first five batters he faced. But Roger Williams scored a run in the seventh on three consecutive singles to send the game into extra innings.
Roger Williams scored the winning run in the eighth on a hit batter and two bloop hits to the outfield.
Westfield outhit Roger Williams, 16-15; all of the Owls' hits came in the first six innings. Jeff Ackerrman was 4 for 4 with two runs scored. Blair, Cloutier, Matt Kelly and Hogan each had a double and single.
