Trinity Baseball Opens RussMatt Central Florida Invitational With Sweep Of Westfield State

Winter Haven, Fla. – The Trinity College Bantams rallied for two runs in the seventh inning of game one and pitchers Andrew Janiga (Ellington, Conn.) and David Casanova (Bristol, Conn.) combined for a a one-hitter in the second game in a 5/4-4/1 doubleheader sweep of the Westfield State University Owls in RussMatt Central Florida Invitational baseball action this afternoon at Chain of Lakes Field.  Trinity improves to 3-1, while the Owls drop to 5-7.

In the opener, the Owls jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead on a three-run homer over the leftfield fence by Josh Blair. Trinity scored a run in the second on RBI double by junior C Luke Auger (Avon, Conn.) and tied the score with two runs in the third on a two-run homer by sophomore Joe Papa (Cambridge, Mass.).  Westfield took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a walk, a Jeff Ackerman single, a hit batter, and an RBI bases loaded walk by Pete Hogan with one out. But the Owls left the bases loaded.  Trinity drew a walk to lead off the seventh followed by a single to put runners at first and third. Sophomore IF Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) then delivered the game-winning, two-run triple to leftfield. But he was stranded at third as reliever Kevin Zyrkowski – who recorded five strikeouts in two and a third innings – got a groundout and two strikeouts.  Blair began the bottom of the seventh by drawing a walk and Matt Kelly had a sacrifice hit. But Hogan and Dale Crispin struck out swinging to end the game.  Junior RHP Angus Anderson (Middletown, R.I.) earned the win on the mound with two innings of scoreless relief, and sophomore righty Ben Goldberg (Plainview, N.Y.) earned a save,

In the second game, Janiga threw five innings of no-hit ball before being pulled with two on and no outs in the top of the sixth having struck out eight and walked five. He issued three walks in the first inning but got out of the jam by striking out the side.  Casanova got two popups and a strikeout to end the threat.  With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Sean Geary broke up the no-hit bid by the two Trinity pitchers by blasting a circuit shot over the leftfield fence. Geary had also hit a hard grounder off the Trinity shortstop's glove in the second inning that was ruled an error.  Geary had three of the Owls' six hits in the twinbill.  Trinity scored all four of its runs on four hits in the third inning off Owl starter Connor Buckley. The big blow was a two-run double by Papa, who was 4-for-7 with two runs, four RBI, a double, and a home run in the two games.
