Bethel Sweeps St. Lawrence in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bethel Baseball squad tallied their first two victories of the year Sunday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida. The Royals swept St. Lawrence by scores of 5-1 and 9-2 to move their record on the year to 2-2.

A combine pitching effort of Matt Johnson and Matt Rowley held the St. Lawrence squad at bay throughout the first game. Johnson went five strong innings allowing three hits and only giving up two walks. Rowley closed out the game by striking out five of six batters faced over the final two frames. David Freed had a phenomenal day at the dish, going 4-4 with and 3 RBI. Jay Slick was also 2-3 in the game with 2 runs scored. 

In game two, the Royals offense broke out for an even better showing at the plate by putting up 9 runs and cruising to a 9-2 victory. The Royals played sound baseball throughout the game as the pitching held St. Lawrence to 2 runs on 5 hits. David Freed went five frames allowing zero earned runs. Matt Pearson came in relief and struck out the side in his lone inning of work. Buddy Flaherty closed out the final frame with a scoreless inning. Erik Anderson had a big night at the plate, going 3-3 with 4 RBI and a home run. Matt Rowley was 2-4 on the night and Austin Hanson finished 2-3 as well. 

The Royals resume play at 12 p.m. Monday afternoon at Terry Park against North Park University.
