St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland and Washington College baseball teams joined forces for 23 runs on 26 hits, including six extra-base hits, as Washington pulled away from the Seahawks with a five-run seventh inning for the 12-11 non-conference win Tuesday afternoon.
Seniors Matt Baden (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), Mark Dattilio (Hagerstown, Md./N. Hagerstown), and Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) and sophomore shortstop Corey Napier (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) all connected on two hits each to pace the Seahawks at the plate.
Dattilio and Napier both cracked doubles while Dattilio drove in three runs. Napier scored two runs, batted two runs in and drew two of the team's eight walks.
Washington (9-6) broke the 5-5 draw in the fourth inning with two runs as first-year right fielder Mike Love (Woodstown, N.J./Woodstown) singled up the middle to bring home both runs. The Shoremen held the two-goal lead until the sixth inning.
In the sixth, the Seahawks (13-10) picked up three runs to stake an 8-7 lead. Dattilio's double to left center allowed Corton and senior catcher Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) to score. Dattilio then came home on Napier's double to left center.
The Shoremen then reclaimed the lead by a 12-8 margin with their five-run seventh inning. Junior catcher John Rolewicz (Bear, Del./Salesianum) notched a three-run double while junior designated hitter Dwight Wilcox (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) had a two-run double.
St. Mary's chipped at Washington's advantage with singular runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Down two runs entering the ninth, the Seahawks got one back when sophomore Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) notched an unearned run on Dattilio's single through the left side. A pitching change cut the rally short as sophomore LHP Kyle Aldrich (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) struck out Napier and got junior third baseman Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) to ground out to third base to record his first save of the season.
Senior RHP Adam Shenk (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) suffered the loss on the mound, giving up three runs (all earned) on two hits in 0.2 innings.
St. Mary's will return to Capital Athletic Conference action this Thursday, March 24 when the Seahawks travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to face the University of Mary Washington at 3:30 pm.
