WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Union College scored more than one run in all but three innings of the nine-inning contest against Allegheny en route to handing the Gators (7-4) a 16-7 loss in their final game of their Florida Spring Break trip. With the sour ending, the Gators finished their southern tour with a 4-3 record, highlighted by an upset win over no. 3 UW-Stevens Point, and significant splits with Bowdoin and no. 21 St. Olaf.
A mixture of fielding errors by the Gators, and seemingly every ball Union put into play finding a hole sparked the 16 runs on 20 hits for Union. The Gators did strike first in the game after starting pitcher Phil Morrissette worked a scoreless top of the first and junior catcher Ben Lowmaster continued his hot hitting with a RBI single to center field scoring sophomore Eric Hansen, who led off the bottom of the frame with a ringing double and was advanced to third with a sacrifice bunt by rookie Kyle Davis.
Union took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning and proceeded to throw a crooked number up in each of the next four innings, including a five-run top of the sixth inning to give them a 14-3 lead. Similar to the first game of a doubleheader against no. 21 St. Olaf, the Gators began to slowly chip away at the sizable deficit. From the bottom of the sixth on, the Gators picked up 11 of their 15 total hits and scored four of their seven runs as well.
Matt Stahl and Lowmaster each went 3-for-5 in the game. Stahl had one RBI with a line drive shot that darted out of left field, while Lowmaster added two RBIs of his own to give him a team-leading 18 on the season.
The Gators head back to the north and are set to open their conference slate with back-to-back key league doubleheaders against Wittenberg University and Denison University starting on Saturday, March 26th against Wittenberg starting at 1:00 p.m. The Denison double-dip is currently set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
