#5 Kean Knocks Off #25 Alvernia, 10-1

Union, N.J. (3/30/11) – Junior Lee Cavico was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored as he helped the #5 Kean University baseball team past #12/25 Alvernia University by the final of 10-1 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Junior Mike Russo (4-0) got the win for the Cougars in a solid outing.  Russo tossed eight innings allowing just one run with four hits.  He also fanned 10 and walked two.  Sophomore Sam Fourre tossed the ninth allowing just one hit.

The Cougars (16-3) struck first and held on for the lead throughout.  With one out and two runners aboard thanks to a walk and hit batsman, Cavico drove in the first runs of the game with a two RBI single.  The Crusaders (15-3) edged back with one in their next at-bat with a two-out RBI single by senior Reid Martin to put the score at 2-1.

Kean then broke the game open with a four spot in the bottom of the fifth.  The Cougars recorded back-to-back-to-back singles from junior Dylan Laguna, Cavico (RBI), and senior Ken Gregory (RBI) for the 4-1 advantage.  Later with two outs, sophomore Nick Ramagli lined a two RBI single up the middle for the 6-1 advantage.

The Cougars would go on to score three more in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  Senior Kyle Walker recorded an RBI sacrifice fly while sophomore Steve Nappe and freshman Tyler Smarslok added RBI singles.  Gregory rounded out the scoring with an RBI single.

Senior Chuck Nicholas suffered the loss for the Crusaders.  Nicholas (3-2) tossed five innings allowing six runs, five earned, and six hits.  He struck out six and walked four.

Offensively Gregory was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a runs scored while Ramagli was 2-for-4 with two RBI.  For Alvernia, sophomore Chris Ray was 2-for-4.

Kean opens up their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) schedule this Saturday as they host #17/20 The College of New Jersey at 11:30 a.m.
