Greenville, Ill., April 2, 2011 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team used a pair of dramatic comebacks to sweep a double header at Greenville College on Saturday afternoon in Greenville, Ill.

The Bears trailed 5-1 in game one before coming back to win 8-7 in nine innings and erased a 9-4 deficit in the second game to pick up a 12-10 victory. Washington University swept the season series with Greenville, going 4-0 against the Panthers this year, and stretched its current winning streak to six-straight, now sitting at 17-11 overall.

Washington University survived a slow start offensively and six errors out in the field to come-from-behind and win game one. Greenville starter Cod Hinterscher held the Bears without a hit through the first five innings and Washington University trailed 5-1 before the offense finally came to life. Once the Bears started hitting they scored in bunches, hanging three runs on the board in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings.

Senior Matt Skinner was the first to get to Hinterscher, leading off the sixth with a double to right field. Hinterscher faced just two more batters and gave up an RBI-base hit to senior Travis May before being relieved by Cody Chain.

Washington U. scored twice more in the sixth but Greenville got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-4 lead into the seventh. The Bears were down to their last out when Skinner sent a base hit into right field to spark a crucial two-out rally. Junior Brandon Rogalski doubled to deep left field to score Skinner, who had advanced to second on a wild pitch, and May tied the game with a homer to right, his first of the year.

Junior Michael Fletcher and freshman Matt Kenahan combined to stifle Greenville's offense in the bottom half of the seventh, and Rogalski pitched the final two innings to earn his second win of the week and third of the year.

In the ninth once again it was May recording the clutch base hit, knocking a two-out single to centerfield to score senior Miguel Davis from third and provide the Bears with their first lead of the game. Greenville loaded the bases with one out against Rogalski in the eighth and ninth innings, but the WUSTL reliever got the Panthers to ground into an inning-ending double play each time.

Despite the six fielding errors Washington University converted five double plays in the game-one victory. May finished the game batting 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored while sophomore catcher David Madson was 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double to left field in the sixth.

Washington University game-two starter Stephen Bonser ran into trouble early in the second game, giving up five earned runs on six hits in the first inning. Greenville scored twice more in the third and fourth to grab a 9-4 lead, but once again the Washington U. offense found its rhythm late in the game.

Having scored twice in the fifth to pull within 9-6, freshman Kyle Billig delivered a two-RBI double to left center field with one out in the sixth to pull his team to within one score, and came across the plate himself thanks to an RBI base hit for sophomore Greg Gleicher later in the inning.

Washington University reliever Max Gordon retired Greenville in order in the bottom half of the sixth, and the Bears scored three more times in the top of the seventh to take the lead for the first time since the top of the first inning. Davis hit an RBI-double to deep left-center field to score Billig. Two batters later Rogalski hit his second home run of the year, a two-run bomb to left center.

Gordon pitched 4.1 innings to pick up his first win of the year, striking out five while giving up just three hits. Freshman Michael Rielly was on the hill for the final two outs of the game, recording the first save of his career.

Rogalski was 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored in game two, while Billig and Gleicher each recorded three hits and an RBI.

Bear Notebook: Sophomore Taylor Berman started game one for Washington University, allowing five runs, only three earned, on five hits with two strikeouts in four innings … Washington U. and Greenville combined to use 10 pitchers in the first game, and eight in the second … After stealing 10 bases against Greenville in a 9-5 win on Friday in St. Louis, the Bears swiped just four bases in Saturday's double header.
