DOVER, Del. – The Frostburg State baseball team completed a Capital Athletic Conference series sweep of Wesley with two wins Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats downed the Wolverines, 2-0, in the first game and hung on to win, 6-5, in the night cap.
Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) remained perfect on the season, picking up the win in the first game. Ridenour allowed just two hits over five innings of work with five strikeouts and gave up no runs to maintain a perfect 0.00 ERA after appearing in four games.
Junior Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) put the Bobcats (16-8, 9-5) on the board first in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single to left field to score classmate John Barrett (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison (Hagerstown)). Frostburg State is now 10-5 on the season when scoring the first run.
Ridenour was carrying a no-hitter into the fourth inning before Steve Panone broke it up with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. Ridenour was able to get himself out of the jam getting Bryan Reshetar out at home after a wild pitch to end the scoring threat from the Wolverines (15-13, 7-7).
Junior Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) added an insurance run in the top of the fifth to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. With two runners on, the first baseman singled up the middle to bring around classmate Garrett Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Emory & Henry)).
Senior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) came out in relief of Ridenour for the sixth and seventh inning and allowed just one base runner while striking out three Wolverines and picked up his save of the season.
Frostburg State once again jumped out to an early lead in the second game on a solo home run from Barrett in the top of the second. The Wolverines, however, had an answer to the run in the home half of the inning. Wesley tied the game at one a piece with an RBI single through the left side from Billy Crowe.
FSU quickly answered with a five-run third to take the lead back, 6-1. Summerfelt led off the inning with a single and senior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) walked before freshman Matt Donaldson (Garrett, Pa./Meyersdale) reached on an error when attempting a sacrifice bunt. With the bases loaded, Price singled to left field to drive home Summerfelt and Heatwole. Barrett then singled through the left side to pick up Donaldson. Anuszewski singled to left to load the bases for senior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett) who walked in the fourth run of the inning. Ridenour hit a fly ball to center field deep enough to allow Barrett to tag up and score and give the Bobcats a 6-1 lead.
The Wolverines would show they still had some fight left in them and scored two in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Bobcat lead, 6-3, with a two-out two-run home run to left field from Ryan Polk. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jon Carlson made it a one-run game with a two-run double down the left field line. Quayle, however, picked up his second save in as many games getting the final Wolverine to go down swinging and hang on to a 6-5 win.
Senior Josh Davis (Freeland, Md./Hereford (Webber International)) picked up the win for the Bobcats going six innings, scattering nine hits and three runs while striking out five. Quayle had two strikeouts in the save and gave up one hit.
Barrett and Price each had two RBIs on the day while Anuszewski led the Bobcat hitters for four hits over the two games.
Frostburg State returns to action when it travels to York, Pa., for a single nine-inning game with CAC opponent York (Pa.) on Wednesday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m.
