THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran snapped a five-game losing skid by defeating the No. 11 ranked team in the nation to open a SCIAC Saturday doubleheader. CLU's Peter Ciaramitaro picked up the win on the mound during a 6-4 victory before the Sagehens handed the Kingsmen an 8-1 loss to close out the day.

A pair of solid pitching performances aided one of the speediest contests at "Sparky" Anderson Field this season. Ciaramitaro for CLU went seven-plus innings to outduel counterpart Stuart Gano who allowed four runs over 6.1 innings.

The Kingsmen hurler was pulled in the eighth after the Sagehens loaded the bases with no outs. CLU closer Byron Minnich was called upon and forced a groundout double play and harmless fly ball to minimize the damage and preserve a 4-3 lead.

The only error of the contest came back to haunt Pomona-Pitzer as it put a runner on base when CLU's Garrett Smith pulled the Leo Rosetti offering inside the right field foul pole for a two-run homer and a 6-3 advantage.

Pomona-Pitzer rallied in the ninth inning with one run and two hits bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. Minnich retired the next two batters and picked up his sixth save of the season.

Cal Lutheran's ability to get the leadoff man aboard paid dividends in the scoring column as four of the five scored in Saturday's opener. The defense held up strong not committing in error in the game and improved the team's mark to 5-0 when playing error-free baseball. The victory ended a five-game losing streak for the Kingsmen and a seven-game win streak by the Sagehens.

In contrast to Saturday's opener it was Pomona-Pitzer's Travis Rooke-Ley on the mound who stole the show tossing an efficient seven shutout innings. The defense helped as 10-of-21 outs were fly balls compared to only one strikeout. He allowed just six hits (five singles) and threw only 81 pitches to earn the win.

He was comfortable on the mound after his team scored in the opening inning and scratched across runs in four of the first six innings. The 4-5-6 hitters for the Pomona-Pitzer lineup went 9-for-13 with four RBI and four walks. Frederick led this trio going 5-for-6 at the plate with an RBI.

Despite the Sagehens scoring eight runs it could have been much more as Pomona-Pitzer left 16 runners on base and at least one in each inning. Of the six inherited runners forced upon the CLU bullpen only one scored.

CLU avoided being shut out for the second time in the past week after Iggy Wagner scored on an eighth inning sacrifice fly from K.C. Judge. As the leadoff hitter of an inning Wagner and John Lead went 4-for-4 and reached base safely all five chances but combined to score only once.

Cal Lutheran (16-12, 10-7 SCIAC) will play a non-conference game at No. 8 Chapman on Wednesday, Apr. 6 at 5 p.m.
