CLEVELAND, Ohio – After a week of postponements and cancelations due to the weather, the Allegheny baseball team was able to take to the diamond on Sunday afternoon, but fell in both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Case Western Reserve University. The Spartans (18-10) used a nine-run second inning to take control of a 15-6 game one victory, and received a dominant pitching performance from game two starter Ray Kelly in a 7-0 shutout win in the nightcap.
The Gators (8-9, 1-3 NCAC) jumped ahead in game one as starting pitcher Mike Pereslucha helped his own cause with a RBI double that plated Kyle Davis in the top of the first inning. After pitching out of trouble in the bottom of the first inning without surrendering a run, Pereslucha ran into more trouble in the bottom of the second inning, but wasn't as fortunate. In that inning, the Spartans struck for nine runs on only four hits. Allegheny would respond in their next at-bat scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the third.
In game one, seniors Zack Nichols and Pereslucha, along with junior Ben Lowmaster, all smacked doubles. Nichols would go 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, and three RBI. Pereslucha went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Lowmaster finished game one 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Game two was unlike any other for the Gators this season as they were held to only two hits for the game. Case Western starter Ray Kelly kept one of the most potent lineups in check by working five complete innings, scattering the two hits, walking three, and striking out three batters as well. After Kelly departed the game, the Spartans' bullpen used two arms to work a pair of perfect innings to close out the game.
The Gators will look to turn their fortunes around with their scheduled home opener on Tuesday, April 5th against Thiel College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The game can be followed live through the Allegheny Baseball Live Stats link, courtesy of the Allegheny College Athletic Communication office.
